Scope and Content Note
This Sub-Group contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia's Chancellors. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence, questionnaires, press releases, event programs, speeches, newspaper clippings, admission statistics, pamphlets, campus maps, committee records, audit reports, self-study review reports, budget materials, annual reports, affirmative action records, audio cassettes, scholarship award records, grant materials, student development records, personnel records, and Parents Weekend information.
Note to Researcher: Early in 1963, the MU System was expanded to include four campuses, at Columbia (UMC), Rolla (UMR), Kansas City (UMKC), and St. Louis (UMSL). A Chancellor was appointed to administer each of these campuses.

This series has been relocated to a new page. Please follow this link to reach the new location. This Sub-Group contains administrative records of the UMC Chancellor's Office, created, principally, during the tenure of UMC's first Chancellor, John W. Schwada, 1965-1973.

This Series contains records created or received by the UMC Chancellor's Office during the tenure of Herbert W. Schooling, (1972-1978). A few records in this Series were created or received during the tenure of UMC Chancellor John W. Schwada (1964-1971). Included in this Series are correspondence, administrative reports, enrollment projections and statistics, campus maps, pamphlets, and newspaper clippings. Topics include proposed research projects, new programs, endowment of Chair positions, scholarships, developmental funding, student free speech and Vietnam war protests, budgets and appropriations, NCA accreditation, Students for a Democratic Society (S.D.S.), Affirmative Action, Gay Liberation, the Status of Women Committee, facilities needs and expansion, search committees, promotion and tenure, the Academic Planning Council, the International Studies Program, the Faculty Council, the United States Bicentennial, the Centennial of Women at the University of Missouri, and agreements with other state universities concerning academic degree data.

Series 3. - C:1/16/3 (A95-101)
This Series contains records of the UMC Campus Appeals Committee, (1977-1979). This was a group appointed by UMC Chancellor Herbert Schooling to review appeals to evaluations of employee classifications, range assignments, and titles arrived at by the Administrative-Professional Study, also known as the "Hayes Study" (ca. 1974). Included in this Series are the Campus Appeals Committee's meeting minutes, correspondence, and final report, as well as a copy of Job Classification Evaluation System, by Hayes and Associates (1974).

Included in this Series are correspondence, speech texts, event programs, newspaper clippings, posters, and a phonograph record. Topics in this Series include the "Proposition B" campaign, the "MU Leads the Way" campaign, and MU's Sesquicentennial.

This Series contains photographs, portraits, and photographic negatives of University of Missouri Presidents and Chancellors, from MU's founding to 2012. Individuals included are C. Peter Magrath, James C. Olson, C. Brice Ratchford, Frederick A. Middlebush, Daniel Read, Walter Williams, Benjamin B. Minor, John H. Lathrop, Samuel S. Laws, John C. Jones, George H. Matthews, James Shannon, William H. Hudson, John Weaver, Elmer Ellis, Stratton D. Brooks, A. Ross Hill, Richard H. Jesse, James Blackwell, Michael M. Fisher, Melvin George, George A. Russell, Manuel Pacheco, Elson Floyd, Gary Forsee, and Tim Wolfe. Governors included in this Series are John Ashcroft and Forrest C. Donnell. Some of these images are photographic reproductions of painted portraits. Also included in this Series is a chronological list of presidents through James C. Olson.

This Series contains records created or received by the UMC Chancellor's Office (1979-1994, bulk 1989-1994). Included in this Series are correspondence and related records created or received primarily by University of Missouri-Columbia Chancellor Charles Keisler (1993-1996). Some correspondence and related records included in this Series were created or received by UMC Chancellor Haskell Monroe (1987-1992) and Interim UMC Chancellor Gerald Brouder (1992-1993). Other than correspondence, this Series contains administrative reports, brochures, procedure manuals, research proposals, position search records, program reviews, budget materials, salary comparisons, newspaper clippings, audit records, statistical data, invitations, social event records, fund-raising records, lobbying records, policy handbooks, teaching load records, conflict of interest records, committee meeting records, and organizational and management reviews. This Series contains records pertaining to the Chancellor's Office during Haskell Monroe's tenure, (1990). In January 1990 Chancellor Haskell Monroe requested that the department chairpersons and directors of the various UMC Schools, Colleges, and Divisions develop five-year departmental plans for submission. This Series contains these Five Year Plans concerning the years 1990-1995 for the following units: College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources; College of Arts and Science; College of Business and Public Administration; College of Education; College of Engineering; Extension Division; Graduate Division; College of Human Environmental Sciences; School of Journalism; School of Law; School of Library and Informational Science; School of Medicine; School of Nursing; and College of Veterinary Medicine.

This Series contains records created by the Office of the Chancellor, (2004), during a period Brady Deaton served as Chancellor of the University of Missouri-Columbia. The records consist of a copy of the Self-Study Report for Accreditation Review submitted by the University of Missouri-Columbia to the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Also included in the Series is an appendix to the Self-Study detailing General Institutional Requirements and a Request for Approval of a Proposed Change: Change in Educational Offerings - Degree Programs through Distance Delivery.

This Series contains photographic prints from Honors Commencement ceremonies held during the tenure of Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin, (2014-2015). The photographs depict Loftin, University of Missouri President Tim Wolfe, Provost Garnett Stokes, Associate Provost Ken Dean, Darwin and Axie Hindman, and others. The photographs depict the December 20th, 2014 and the May 16th, 2015 ceremonies.

This Series contains photographic prints from a Patriot Day ceremony held during the tenure of Interim Chancellor Henry "Hank" Foley, (2016). The photographs depict Hank Foley and others involved with and attending the ceremony, including Lucy Willett, the mother of University of Missouri alumnus John Charles Willett who was killed in the attack on the World Trade Center in New York in September of 2001.

This Series contains records of the Office of the Chancellor during the period Garnett S. Stokes served as Interim Chancellor, (2017). The records consist of budget-related files and audio/visual recordings of budget forums. The video recordings were made by the Academic Support Center and transmitted live to the university community.

This Series contains records of the Office of the Chancellor during the period Alexander N. Cartwright served as Chancellor, (2018-2020). The records consist of printed and duplicated material and audio-visual recordings of speeches, audio transmissions, and supplementary material, including official transcriptions. The video recordings were transmitted live to the university community via the web pages of the Office of the Chancellor while audio recordings were made available as a series of podcasts entitled Inside Mizzou. Series 28 also holds copies of the Chancellor's Inside Mizzou and Mizzou Update newsletters.

The records consist of the following types and topics: correspondence, memoranda, reports, campus schools, colleges, centers, departments, and programs, campus buildings, awards, strategic planning, fund raising, honorary degrees, including honorary degree candidates, cooperative prgrams, Chancellor's staff and personnel [RESTRICTED], University of Missouri presidents, search committees [RESTRICTED], the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and campus events. The Series also includes a number of Brady Deaton's speeches, (2004-2013). The majority of the records in Series 29 were created during the chancellorship of Brady Deaton.

This Series contains memorabilia of the University of Missouri collected by Chancellor John W. Schwada. The memorabilia consist of a decorative pewter Jefferson Club plate, a football inscribed to "Dr. Schwada" and signed by coaches and players of the 1966 football team, and a copy of Frank Stephen's A History of the University of Missouri inscribed by Schwada.

Series 31. - C:1/23a/5 (A22-34; A23-75)
This Series contains professional records of Chancellor Brady Deaton, (ca. 1966-2022). The records consist mostly of Deaton's professional and academic writings, presentations, and speeches. The research output in this Series covers the period from Deaton's studies at the Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce at the University of Kentucky to his time as professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Missouri. Other records in Series 31 include administrative correspondence and notes, the majority of which stem from the Deaton's time in the University of Missouri's Administration.

Note to Researcher: Brady Deaton attended the University of Kentucky and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics in 1966 and a Master's degree from the School of Diplomacy and International Commerce in 1968. From the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Deaton received a Master of Science and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics in 1970 and 1972 respectively. From 1972 until 1978, Deaton taught at the University of Tennessee as an Assistant and Associate Professor before moving to the Agricultural Economics Department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he stayed until 1989 when he started at the University of Missouri. Following his work as professor in Agricultural Economics and the Social Sciences Unit Leader in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources from 1989 through 1993, Deaton served in the University of Missouri's Administration as Chief of Staff for the Chancellor (1993-1997), Deputy Chancellor (1997-1998) and Interim Provost (1998), Provost (1998-2003), and Chancellor (2004-2013).

This Series contains miscellaneous records received from the Office of the Chancellor, (1992-1993). The records consist of material related to the University of Missouri Advisory Committee on the 21st Century, including the membership list, introductory statements, general information about the University of Missouri and the State of Missouri, individual task force reports, media clippings, conference call meeting minutes, presentation comments, and memoranda.

Restrictions Note: The Archives of the University of Missouri-Columbia is required by law and Board of Curator's policy to restrict access to some files and information. Student records are held as confidential under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and by University policy. Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
