Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains administrative records of the UMC Chancellor's Office, created, principally, during the tenure of UMC's first Chancellor, John W. Schwada (1964-1971). Some of the records in this Series, however, are dated as early as 1940. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence, news releases, event programs, committee agendas and meeting minutes, copies of commencement speeches, and emeritus faculty information cards. Topics in this Sub-Group include dedications, faculty retirement ceremonies, honorary degree awards, student entrance procedures, Tap Day, and University Day and Earth Day celebrations.

Series Descriptions:

This Record Sub-Group is divided into two series. Series One contains correspondence, memoranda, Office of Public Information releases, programs, and photographs from the Chancellor's office pertaining to commencement proceedings arranged chronologically by year. Series Two contains correspondence, memoranda, Office of Public Information releases, programs, and photographs from the Chancellor's office pertaining to miscellaneous subjects arranged topically by subject.

Student records are held as confidential under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and by University policy. Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
