Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains the personal and professional papers of University of Missouri President C. Brice Ratchford. Ratchford was President of the University System from 1970 through 1975. The materials included cover his tenure as President as well as his service as Dean of the University Extension Division and Agricultural Extension Service, from 1959 to 1965. Included are speeches, correspondence, reports, investiture materials and copies of the President's Bulletins. This Sub-Group also contains some materials created previous to and following the tenure of President Ratchford. Many of the earlier records relate to UM-System President, John C. Weaver, whose tenure was from 1966 to 1970.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - UW:4/3/7
This Series contains papers of University of Missouri President C. Brice Ratchford (1950-1970). Included are two file guides, compiled during President Ratchford's deanship of the University Extension Division. The file guides are indexed according to subject and cover materials accumulated from the Vice President for Extension, the Director of Administrative Management and the Directory of Quality of Living Programs (1950 to 1965). Among the topics covered are agencies, alumni, budgets, commissions, committees and publications.

Series 2. - UW:4/3/9
This Series contains papers of University of Missouri President C. Brice Ratchford (1971-1974). Included are issues of the President's Bulletin. The President's Bulletin was started by President Ratchford's administration as a vehicle to reach all four campuses. It attempted to answer many of the questions concerning role and scope of various UM-System offices. The President's Bulletin was not published regularly, rather as needed. The publication Spectrum took the place of President's Bulletin in 1974.

Series 3. - UW:4/3/4 (A76-5)
This Series contains University of Missouri President C. Brice Ratchford's correspondence and memoranda relating to revising Executive Order Number One (1968-1973). Executive Order Number One is the document that explains the roles, responsibilities, and inter-relationships of all UM-System officers. Included are drafts and typed opinions from staff members such as Vice Presidents, Chancellors, and the University's General Counsel.

Series 4. - UW:4/3/1 (A74-21)
This Series contains items regarding the investiture of C. Brice Ratchford as President of the University of Missouri, September 15, 1972. Included are event programs, booklets containing speeches given at the investiture, correspondence, tickets, materials regarding planning for the investiture, invitations, guest lists, reply cards and a press kit.

This Series contains papers of University of Missouri President C. Brice Ratchford (1971). Included in this Series are program appraisal forms. These forms from all of the schools and colleges of the four-campus UM-System were completed for the fall of 1971.

Included in this Series are correspondence, reports, testimony before committees, transcripts of hearings, news clippings, press releases, meeting minutes, and photographs, and a copy of Ratchford's book, Memoirs of My Years at the University of Missouri, published in 1996.

Series 7. - UW:4/3/6 (A76-31; A81-10)
This Series contains speeches and related materials given by C. Brice Ratchford during his terms as Dean of the University Extension Division, Interim President of the University of Missouri System and President of the University of Missouri System. The speeches span the years 1959 to 1976. Topics covered in these speeches include extension activities, various community clubs, curators workshops and seminars, legislative matters, public higher education, commencement, investiture, faculty, alumni, conferences and testimony before legislative committees. Also included in this Series are public relations materials such as correspondence, biographical information, news clippings and press releases.

Series 8. - UW:4/3/5 and UW:4/3/2 (A76-31)
This Series contains papers of University of Missouri President C. Brice Ratchford (1956-1994). Included are President Ratchford's appointment calendars and congratulatory correspondence. The seventeen appointment calendars (1959-1975) cover his years as Dean of the Agricultural Extension Service, Vice President for University Extension and his term as UM System President. The 1987, 1988, 1992, 1993 and 1994 calendars are monthly planners rather than diaries. Most of the entries are related to the university although there a are few personal and church-related entries. The congratulatory letters include copies of incoming and outgoing letters, telegrams and memoranda relating to Ratchford's appointments as Director of the Agricultural Extension Service (1959), Vice President for the Extension Division (1965), Interim President (1970), President (1971) and election as a Squire (1971).

Series 9. - UW:4/3/11 (A04-125)
This Series contains memorabilia accumulated by C. Brice Ratchford during his academic and professional life, (1947-1987). The Series consists of Ratchford's Phi Kappa Phi Certificate, (1947), an Honorary Citizen of Tempe Arizona Plaque, (1972), and a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Plaque, (1987).
