Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Arts and Science, Department of Speech and Dramatic Art. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence, telegrams, photographs, scrapbooks, research reports, pamphlets, forms, transcripts, personnel information, role and scope materials, professional association files, announcements, student grades, exams, lists of courses offered, course information, leave of absence reports, faculty publications, committee meeting minutes, annual departmental reports, speech texts, play posters, faculty directories, and professors' course materials.

Historical Note:

After 1986, this Department was replaced by the Department of Communications when the Theatre Department, in the School of Fine Arts, was developed.

Series 1. - C:6/38/1 (A80-7; A87-106)
This Series holds administrative records of the UMC Department of Speech and Dramatic Art, (ca. 1935-1970). These records were created during the tenures of Department Chairs Wilbur Gilman, Bower Aly, Loren Reid, and Donovan Rhynsburger. Included in this series are departmental correspondence, telegrams, photographs, professional association files, research reports, pamphlets, forms, transcripts, personnel information, role and scope materials, announcements, student grades, exams, lists of courses offered, course information, leave of absence reports, and faculty publications.

These materials were created by Professor Loren Reid or by departmental faculty and staff, principally during Reid's tenure as Department Chair, 1947-1952 and 1966-1967.

This Series contains records and memorabilia of the UMC Department of Speech and Dramatic Art, (ca. 1956-1967). Included in this series are University Theatre play posters, performance announcements, audition announcements, contest announcements, workshop meeting records, and season tickets for the University Theatre.

These records were created during Professor Henry Donovan Rhynsburger's tenures as Director of the Missouri Workshop Theatre, 1925-1936 and 1938-1973.

Series 5. - C:6/38/7A (A76-47; A79-14)
This Series contains records and memorabilia of the UMC Department of Speech and Dramatic Art, (ca. 1931-1966). Included in this Series are 3 rolls of microfilm, which are copies of the 27 Missouri Workshop scrapbooks included in Series 4 above. Included on the microfilm are newspaper clippings, news releases, photographs, play programs, and information regarding plays performed, Missouri Workshop Theatre meetings, dramatic contests, banquets, experimental plays, "happy hours" for WWII GIs, membership drives, the Rinsewater Rag newsletter (sent to WWII GIs), Towertime (a student literary publication), The Tombstone (a Missouri Workshop newsletter), Stephens College and Christian College dramatic productions, and the 05/1952 panty raids at UMC and Stephen College.

This Series contains records of the UMC Department of Speech and Dramatic Art, (ca. 1969-1985). Included in this Series are Summer Repertory Theatre materials such as play programs, cast rosters, rehearsal schedules, cast and crew applications, mailing lists, performance schedules, attendance data, contractual documents, and related correspondence.

This Series contains administrative records of the UMC Department of Speech and Dramatic Art, (ca. 1955-1983). Included in this Series are correspondence files and other records pertaining to the Department's Senior Staff meetings, Executive Committee meetings, Arts and Science Policy Committee meetings, and Role and Scope Committee meetings. Also included in the Series are departmental self-study reports, a copy of the 1979-1980 departmental annual report, and a copy of Department Chair Loren Reid's book entitled Howgozit.

Clark, 1970-1972. Some of Professor Clark's personal correspondence is also included.

This Series contains records of the UMC Department of Speech and Dramatic Art, (ca. 1977-1987). Included in this Series are materials relating to the American College Theatre Festival, such as organizational and operational records, committee meeting minutes, regional festival records, Irene Ryan Award files, and ten and twenty year reviews of the Festival.

This Series holds memorabilia of the UMC Department of Speech and Dramatic Art, (ca. 1993). Included in this Series is a VHS videocassette of a slide show which was prepared for professor Emeritus H. Donovan Rhynsburger's 90th birthday party, held in UMC's Rhynsburger Theater.

The records consist of thirty-four 8x10 black-and-white and color photographs, 4x5 negatives, 35 mm negatives, photographic slides, and play programs pertaining to the following productions: Above the Fire, Aesop's Falables, Ah, Wilderness, and The Amorous Flea.

This Series contains records created and received by the Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts, (1929-1982, bulk 1970-1980). The records consist of production photographs and negatives, publicity materials including news clippings, and programs for numerous theatre productions. Also included in this Series are correspondence and publicity files for students and faculty.

Note to Archivist: The box lists for this Series are available online. They can be accessed by
following this link. Digital preservation copies of the nitrate-base negatives in this Series were made in 2021 and the negatives discarded. Deteriorating acetate-base negatives have from time to time been reformatted into digital files.

Restrictions Note: The Archives of the University of Missouri-Columbia is required by law and Board of Curator's policy to restrict access to some files and information. Student records are held as confidential under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and by University policy. Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
