Scope and Content Note

(A75-32)
This Series contains records of the UMC Department of Speech and Dramatic Art. These materials were created by Professor Loren Reid or by departmental faculty and staff, principally during Reid's tenure as Department Chair, 1947-1952 and 1966-1967. Included in this Series are correspondence files, reports, tests, speech texts, research materials, and faculty directories. Also included in this Series are pre-publication drafts of Professor Reid book on the life and work of Charles James Fox, a book entitled Teaching Speech, and a work entitled Studies on American Public Address in Honor of Albert Craig Baird. Topics of correspondence in this Series include courses taught by closed circuit television, the Speech Association of America, departmental committee assignments, faculty leaves of absence, and planning for the inaugural of MU President John Weaver.

Biographical Note:

Loren Dudley Reid was born in Gilman City, Missouri in 1905; his parents were Dudley and Josephine Tarwater Reid. His father edited the weekly Gilman City Guide. The family moved to Osceola, Iowa where Reid graduated from high school in 1922.

Reid received his BA from Grinnell College in 1927, and his MA and Ph.D. from Grinnell College in 1930 and 1933, respectively. He began his teaching career during the height of the Great Depression in 1933 as a high school speech teacher in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1935 he first became an instructor then an assistant professor at the University of Missouri in 1935. He moved to a position as an assistant then associate professor at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York in 1939, where he remained until 1944, when he returned to the University of Missouri as a full professor. He was chairman of the Speech Department from 1946 to 1951 and from 1965 to 1966.

Professor Reid was an energetic academic with many interests that ranged from railroads to mystery codes to British oratory, which made him well-liked as a visiting professor. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s he taught at many institutions, which gave him and his family the opportunity to visit different parts of the United States and to travel overseas as well. Additionally, he was a popular guest speaker, often delivering keynote addresses at commencement exercises and other affairs. He was instrumental in establishing speech as a serious field of study, and was a founding member and officer in more than one professional speech society, including the Speech Association of America. He served as editor or on the editorial board for many of the speech journals, was a prolific contributor to journals, magazines, and newspapers, and authored or co-authored numerous books.

He was married to Agusta Towner Reid in 1930, who taught English at the University of Missouri . They had four children, Ellen Jane, John Christopher, Stephen, and Don Anthony. Reid retired from the University in 1975; however, he continued to research, write, and lecture with as much zeal into the 1990s as he had in the 1930s.
