Scope and Content Note

This Record Sub-Group contains University of Missouri-Columbia athletic memorabilia relating to MU football and other sports. Many of the materials were collected by participants and donated by alumni, family members, and supporters of the University of Missouri-Columbia athletics. Other materials were sponsored by area businesses and collected by Archives staff and friends of the University Archives.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:31/4/1 (A01-05)
This Series contains memorabilia of the undefeated 1909 Roper football team collected by freshman team-member Eugene C. Hall, (1909-1912). It contains a wool sweater that was part of the uniform, a dance card in the shape of a football, a photograph of Hall in uniform, (ca. 1909), a program from the 50 year reunion of the 1909 team, (10/23/1959), a newspaper article from that reunion, and two Lifetime Athletic Passes awarded to Hall in honor of his contributions to MU athletics. The sweater is black with gold and black horizontally striped sleeves. This collection was donated by family members Zane Bruce and Mary Nell Hall.

Series 2. - C:31/4/2 (A01-08; A23-49; A23-54)
This Series consists of University of Missouri athletic memorabilia donated by Ronald Freiburghaus, (1890, 1907-2008). It contains the only known uniform from the first MU football team, (1890), collected by Charles A. Keith, co-founder and member of the first team. Also included in Series 2 are event programs, postcards, a photograph of Don Faurot, an authenticated signature of Jackson Scholz, a cigarette pack leather insert collectible, and a large, felt University of Missouri pennant.

Series 3. - C:31/4/3 (A01-07)
This Series contains two wool M Men's Club sweaters and a wool stadium blanket collected by Townsend Hader, member of the 1932-1935 MU football squads.

Series 4. - C:31/4/4
This Series contains materials relating to the University of Missouri-Columbia Intercollegiate Athletic Department's football program, (1950, 1978-1979, 1985-2009). Included in this Series are metal buttons/pins, (1988-2009), a round plastic luggage tag labeled "Missouri vs L.S.U. - Liberty Bowl," (12/23/1978), 3 coins imprinted with football schedules, (1978-1979, 1985), magnet football schedules, (1997-2001), Tail-gate passes (1999-2001), a photo booth pass for the Missouri-Clemson football game, (1950), and felt game pennants (2001). Sponsors for these materials are: Boone County National Bank, Citizens Savings Association, Kansas City Life Insurance Co., KCMQ, Schnucks, Edward D. Jones Investments, and UMB Bank.

Series 5. - C:31/4/5 (A02-144)
This Series contains memorabilia collected by Paul R. Brayton, a 1931 UMC Agriculture graduate and member of the football team, (1927-1930, 1957, 1964). Included in this Series are: an alumni UMC decal; Honor Banquet Program for Missouri Football Squad, (1929); letters and poems concerning football; Football Season Ticket Advertisement with Brayton's photograph on the front, (1930); varsity songs; handwritten football play diagrams; newsclippings about the UMC football team, (1929); non-university related items (letter and newsclipping related to automobile accident and a 1957 Harvard College transcript for Paul Richard Brayton, Jr.); two black-and-white photographs of a Brayton family member, (1964); and various black-and-white team, individual, and action photographs concerning baseball, basketball, football, and track with coaches and players, (1927-1929).

Series 6. - C:31/4/6 (A05-36)
This Series contains memorabilia of the University of Missouri football team, (1941), consisting of a newspaper clipping from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch Pictures edition featuring an image of the 1941 team prior to the 1942 Sugar Bowl.

Series 7. - C:31/4/7 (A06-34)
This Series contains audio and video recordings relating to the University of Missouri football team, (1938-1940, 1963), donated by Shepard Cooper, a 1978 graduate of the University. The video is a DVD recording of films from the Archives featuring players and staff from the 1938 through 1940 seasons as well as a travelogue of the 1940 Orange Bowl trip to Miami, Florida. Period music and captions identifying players and personnel have been added to the film footage. The audio recordings consist of two 7 1/2 inch reel to reel recordings of the 4th quarter and post game interviews from a KMOX broadcast of the September 18, 1963 football game against Arkansas, featuring play by play by Harry Caray.

Series 8. - C:31/4/8 (A07-34)
This Series contains an item of memorabilia of the University of Missouri football team, (1939-1940). The Series consists of one football signed by the members of the 1939 football team and its coaching staff. The football is inscribed with "1939 Big Six Champs" and "1940 Orange Bowl." Names on the football include Paul Christman, Bob Waldorf, Bill Cunningham, and Don Faurot.

Series 9. - C:31/4/9 (A14-47)
This Series contains memorabilia of University of Missouri football, (ca. 1910-1911). The memorabilia consist of postcards depicting MU football players from end of the first decade of the twentieth century. Included are the following players: A. G. Alexander, J. R. Bluck, W. C. Bradley, J. S. Clare, H. W. Crain, W. N. Deatherage, D. E. Dexter, P. J. Doyle, H. S. Gove, T. D. Hackney, E. C. Hall, A. M. Idler, J. E. Pixlee, C. L. Ristine, W. H. Roberts, W. H. Saunders, F. B. Thacher, and A. B. Wilder. One of the postcards depicts a football scrimmage. The Series also contains copies of the postcards and a copy of an article entitled "The Fighting Tigers."

This Series contains memorabilia of football and basketball players from the University of Missouri, (ca. 1970-2009). The memorabilia consist of collectors and/or trading cards depicting college and professional football or basketball players. The players included in this Series are: Rickey Paulding, Anthony Peeler, Kareem Rush, Doug Smith, Victor Bailey, Tim Bruton, Chase Coffman, Jeff Cross, Chase Daniel, Robert Delpino, Brad Edelman, Atiyyah Ellison, Mel Gray, Jim Harrison, Erik McMillan, Henry Marshall, Johnny Roland, Andy Russell, Brad Smith, Justin Smith, Russ Washington, Roger Wehrli, Curtis Wilson, Kellen Winslow, and Eric Wright.

Series 12. - C:31/4/12
This Series contains memorabilia of the University of Missouri women's volleyball team, (2013, 2016). The memorabilia include a felt pennant commemorating the team's 2013 Southeastern Conference championship, and two roll-up banners from the 2016 season.

Series 13. - C:31/4/13 (A15-70; A21-29)
This Series contains memorabilia of the University of Missouri football team, (1933-1936). The memorabilia consist of a letterman sweater of MU alumnus Barney William Finkel (Bachelor of Arts, 1937; Bachelor of Science in Medicine, 1939) who played guard and lettered in 1934 and 1935. The knit, black sweater has the number "33" sewn on the chest. The Series also includes copies of a photograph of Finkel in a football stance and a copy of an obituary notice, (2003). Series 13 also includes five football game programs from Finkel's time at the University of Missouri: Missouri at Washington University, November 18, 1933; St. Louis University at Missouri, October 20, 1934; Washington University at Missouri, November 17, 1934; Missouri at Oklahoma, November 3, 1934; and Missouri at Washington University, November 16, 1935.

Series 14. - C:31/4/14 (A17-19)
This Series contains memorabilia of the University of Missouri men's swim team. The memorabilia consist of a letterman jacket of MU alumnus Richard Kammerer (Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, 1980) and a copy of Mizzou Review, (1978-1979), showing Kammerer as a member of the swim team.

Series 15. - C:31/4/15 (A17-54)
This Series contains memorabilia of University of Missouri football, (1937-1940). The memorabilia consist of two blankets received by Robert J. Waldorf (Bachelor of Arts in Economics, 1940) for his participation and exceptional performance in the sport. Waldorf's letterman blanket has gold trim on a black background and is for the years 1937, 1938, and 1939. The other blanket commemorates Waldorf as an All American for 1940. The blanket is white with blue trim and has an All American shield in the center.
