Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources' Department of Dairy Science (since 1989, Dairy Science has been a Division within the Department of Animal Sciences). Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence, photographs, photographic negatives, maps, architectural drawings, blueprints, posters, manuscripts, publications, academic personnel records, student course papers, lecture notes, radio program transcripts, glass photographic slides, films, research notebooks, MU Dairy Club meeting minutes and financial ledger, banquet programs, a coloring book Cows Are Different Colors, student publications, committee meeting minutes, Missouri Dairy Foundation and Dairy Advisory Council records, UMC Agricultural Experiment Station reports, Hatch Act research proposals, research project reports, departmental budget materials, department and college evaluations and reviews, and printed and duplicated material.

This Series has been enlarged to a full inventory. Please follow this link to reach the inventory. The former Series contains photographs and photographic negatives pertaining to the history of the UMC Dairy Science Department, (1900-1966).

Series 2. - C:3/22/5 (A93-116)
This Series contains aerial photographs, maps, building plot plans, architectural drawings, blueprints, and floor plans of facilities and farms used by the UMC Dairy Science Department,(1930-1960). These records relate to facilities on the UMC campus, the Southwest Research Center, the Forage Systems Research Center, Hatch Dairy Experiment Farm, South Farm, Foremost Guernsey Farm, West Farm, and the Midway Dairy Farm. Also included in this Series is documentation concerning construction of the University of Missouri Dairy Farm, (n.d.) and Hatch Experiment Farm, (1931), (1 Env). Lastly, included in this Series is a final inventory of existing equipment in the Animal, Dairy and Poultry Science Departments, which consists of charts, layouts, and photographs, (03/1982).

This Series contains two large posters, created by either Professor Leroy S. Palmer or Department of Dairy Science Chair, C. H. Eckles, for use in Dairy Husbandry courses, (1913-1919). These posters are entitled "Why Butter Is Yellow," and "Why Butter Is White."

This Series contains records of the UMC Department of Dairy Science, (1914-1980). Included in this Series are manuscripts, reprints, and copies of research publications by faculty of the Department of Dairy Science. Also included are Department of Dairy Science academic personnel files, containing information forms, job histories, photographs, and newspaper clippings.

Series 5. - C:3/22/2 (A75-66)
This Series contains records of the UMC Department of Dairy Science, (1919-1972). Many of the materials in this Series were created by Professor Charles Wesley Turner, a specialist in the field of hormones and their effect on milk secretion. Included in this Series are correspondence files, student course papers, lecture notes, radio program transcripts, glass photographic slides, motion picture films, research notebooks, published and unpublished manuscripts, photographs of faculty and student research projects, and reports of experiments at Agricultural Experiment Stations. Also included in this Series is a film entitled "Story of Milk Secretion."

Series 6. - C:3/22/1
This Series contains records of the UMC Department of Dairy Science, (1920-1974). Many of the materials in this Series were created by Professor William H. E. Reid or relate to research done by Reid and other departmental faculty and students in furthering development of the dairy industry in Missouri. Included are Professor Reid's MS Thesis (1920), copies of scholarly papers (by Professor Reid and other departmental faculty), speeches and addresses given to professional gatherings (including meetings of the Missouri Butter and Cheese Institute, the Missouri Association of Cheese Manufacturers, and the Missouri Creamerymen's Improvement Association), publications, glass photographic slides (used in courses), student research notebooks, student thesis proposals and papers, and photographs of faculty, students, departmental facilities, and milk processing plants and creameries. Also included in the Series is a motion picture film concerning ice cream melting research.

Series 7. - C:3/22/8 and C:3/22/3 (A86-54; A93-116)
This Series contains records of the MU Dairy Club, the Missouri Student Chapter of the American Dairy Science Association, (1905-1976). The Dairy Club was organized in 1905 and sponsored by the Department of Dairy Husbandry's first Chairman, C. H. Eckles. Included in this Series are histories of the club, meeting minute ledgers, financial records, banquet programs, membership lists, constitution and by-laws, scrapbooks, annual reports, announcements of activities, photographs of Dairy Club banquets and judging competition winners, and a coloring book, entitled, Cows Are Different Colors. Also included in the Series are copies of the MU Dairy Club yearbook, The M.U. Milkman, for the years 1955 through 1976.

Included in this Series are correspondence files, committee meeting minutes, Missouri Dairy Foundation and Dairy Advisory Council records, UMC Agricultural Experiment Station reports, Hatch Act research proposals, research project reports, departmental budget materials, and department and college evaluations and reviews.

This series contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources' Department of Dairy Science. Materials include research into various topics. Topics include Dairy Goats, Bulk Milk, Ice Cream, Sour Cream, cottage cheese, and a special report related to Missouri Dairy Farms Requirements and Returns, (1932-2000). Also included in this Series are materials related to various Dairy Days, (1951-1958), the Dairy Hall of Honors, (2000), and the DHIA Annual Summary, (1971, 1981).

Series 10. - C:3/22/12 (A11-28)
This Series contains records created and received by the Department of Dairy Husbandry in the College of Agriculture at the University of Missouri, (ca. 1887-1969). The records consist of herd registers and photographic scrapbooks. The registers including information on pedigree, offspring, dispositions, and milking production. Also found among the registers are milk records, (1898-1904), milk tally sheets from Hatch Farms, (1938-1949), and a Dairy Department receipt book, (1946-1947). The majority of the scrapbooks contain photographs and a few negatives of individual animals from the herds. A few of the scrapbooks include images of extension work, laboratory and experiment animals, fertility studies, cattle breeding, cattle judging teams, faculty/staff group photographs, breeding record cards and charts, and grounds and buildings, including the creamery. This Series also contains a number of oversized photographs of animal science faculty, including the College of Agriculture emeritus professors, (1959), a trophy for "Dairy Club Princess," (1975-1989), plaques, and photo albums of the University of Missouri sheep herd and Experiment Station sheep, (1909-1942).

The records were received from the Department of Animal Science in 2011, but are included in the Dairy Husbandry Sub-Group since the majority of the material dates from before the existence of the Department of Animal Science. It should be noted as well that the few non-dairy materials (e.g., Animal Husbandry) were kept in this Series rather than distributed to other College of Agriculture Sub-Groups.

This Series contains printed and duplicated material related to the Department of Dairy Science. Included in the Series are the following titles and topics: "Harvesting Your Milk Crop," "The Missouri Farm Bulk Milk Hauler-Samplers' Manual," the Dairy Hall of Honor Award Program, Show-Me Dairy, Inc. "Dairying Living in Missouri," Missouri Dairy Association, "Serving Missouri's Dairy Industry," Foremost Dairy Research and Teaching Center, Dairy Science, Foremost Guernesy Unit, the Association of Missouri Dairy Organizations, and Missouri Dairy Day.

This Series contains one clear glass half-pint milk bottle (n.d.) from the University of Missouri Department of Dairy Husbandry. According to a heel code and maker's mark stamped in the glass, the bottle was manufactured by the Thatcher Glass Manufacturing Company.
