Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group holds records pertaining to the legal affairs of the University of Missouri Board of Curators. Included are correspondence, newspaper clippings, copies of court decisions, property transfer and sale documents, rules governing university-owned patents, suggested legislative measures, and special committee messages.

Series Description:

Series 1. - UW:1/7/1 (A75-33; A78-72)
This Series contains records relating to miscellaneous legal affairs of the MU Board of Curators (1872-1968). Included are decisions by the Supreme Court of Missouri concerning legal cases involving the University, a copy of a 1945 challenge to the constitutionality of "House Bill 138" (calling for teaching of the last two years of MU's Medical School in Kansas City), an 1872 list of University lands for sale or lease, and a 1905 copy of General Laws Relating to Agricultural and Mechanical Land Grant Colleges. Also included is a copy of a pamphlet entitled Patent Regulations (1968).

This Series contains records relating to miscellaneous legal affairs of the MU Board of Curators (1938-1940). Included is a copy of the "Lloyd Gaines versus Canada and the University of Missouri" decision by the United States Supreme Court as well as newspaper clippings relating to that case.

Series 3. - UW:1/7/3 (A75-33)
This Series contains records relating to miscellaneous legal affairs of the MU Board of Curators (1936-1937). Included are transcripts of three hearings by the Board of Curators to investigate accusations of corruption which had been made against Dr. S. L. Baysinger of the Missouri State School of Mines and Metallurgy, at Rolla. Dr Baysinger is questioned as are those advancing charges against him.

Student records are held as confidential under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and by University policy. Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
