Scope and Content Note
This Sub-Group contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Arts and Science's Department of Physics and Astronomy. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence files, faculty meeting minutes, photographs, biographical sketches, departmental histories, guest registers, architects notes, and building blueprints. Some of the correspondence files pertain to recruitment for teaching positions and applications for assistantships. This Sub-Group also contains various printed and duplicated materials from the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Series 2. - C:6/32/1 (A75-38; A81-21)
This Series holds records of the UMC Department of Physics and Astronomy (ca. 1974). Included in this Series is a departmental history by Professor Newell S. Gingrich (ca. 1974) entitled Some Facts and Recollections of the History of the Department of Physics at the University of Missouri in Columbia. The History includes a number of appendices that contain additional information about the Physics Department.

Series 3. - C:6/32/3 (A81-21; A81-74)
This Series Holds records of the UMC Department of Physics and Astronomy (ca. 1926-1981). Included in this Series are guest register books from Laws Observatory (ca. 1951-1976) and a departmental history by Professor Charles J. Peterson (ca. 1981) entitled An Informal History of Astronomy at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Also included is a 8x10 black-and-white photograph (ca. 1926) of the construction of Memorial Stadium with the Observatory visible in the background.

Series 4. - C:6/32/5 (A05-09)
This Series contains administrative correspondence of the Department of Physics, (1903-1905, 1919-1930, 1945-1950), created and received by departmental chairmen, Oscar S. Stewart, Newell S. Gingrich, and H. E. Hammond. The majority of the correspondence concerns recruitment and applications for teaching positions and assistantships in the Department, including letters of reference and recommendation [RESTRICTED]. This correspondence includes some from Richard H. Jesse to O. S. Stewart regarding an open position in the department. Supplementary to this correspondence are additional application materials such as educational transcripts and photographs [RESTRICTED]. The Series also contains departmental correspondence not related to position recruitment or assistantships, including correspondence with text book distributors and with individuals concerning physics principles and problems, (1903-1905).

This Series contains printed and duplicated materials, (1911-2004), produced by the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the College of Arts and Science at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Among the formats, topics, and titles in this Series are the following: laboratory manuals; course packets; graduate student handbooks; academic program brochures; event programs, including the annual Physics Research Program Reviews, (1975-1986); and Annual Reports, (1978-1990).

This Series contains administrative and historical records of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, (ca. 1940-2006). The administrative records consist of faculty meeting minutes [RESTRICTED], agendas, meeting notes, correspondence, memoranda, qualifying examination questions and data [RESTRICTED], faculty files [RESTRICTED], departmental reviews, and the department's academic plan. The historical records consist of departmental histories by Newell S. Gingrich, (1974-1981), and Charles Peterson, (1981), a "History of the Romance Languages at Mizzou, 1943-1992" by Bonner Mitchell, (1995), news clippings, departmental printed and duplicated material, photographs, and drawings for a Foucault pendulum.

Restrictions Note: The Archives of the University of Missouri-Columbia is required by law and Board of Curator's policy to restrict access to some files and information. Student records are held as confidential under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and by University policy. Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
