Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group holds administrative office files and printed and duplicated materials generated by the University of Missouri-Columbia Extension Division's Center for Independent Study. Included in the Sub-Group are general correspondence files, course syllabi, study guides for courses, and case studies concerning courses in small business management and in mathematics. Also in this Sub-Group are included artist's proofs, prints, and drawings created by a staff member of the Center for Independent Study.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:18/6/1 (A82-57)
This Series contains artist's proofs, prints, and drawings created by Jerry Moffit, a staff member of the UMC Extension Division's Center for Independent Study (1980-1982). Included in the Series are thirty works of art, in various sizes and formats, depicting a wide range of subjects.

Series 2. - C:18/6/NP (A91-29)
This Series holds office files of the UMC Extension Division's Center for Independent Study (ca. 1985). Included are general correspondence files and materials concerning courses in small business management and in mathematics.

Series 3. - C:18/6/2 (A95-58; A97-35; A99-51; A04-16; A07-10; A11-88; A15-53; Pamphlet File)
This Series contains course syllabi and study guides for courses offered by the Extension Division's Center for Independent Study, (1989-2004). These correspondence and Internet-based courses are designed by regular MU faculty from all four campuses of the University of Missouri System and include offerings from most MU Schools and Colleges. Independent Study courses are offered as supplements to on-campus classes (for full-time students) and as alternatives to on-campus study (for working students and students still attending high school).

Series 4. - C:18/6/3 (A04-44; A07-10; A11-89)
This Series contains administrative records created and received by the Extension Division's Center for Independent Study, (1991-2003). The records consist of correspondence, contracts, and syllabus material, concerning Center for Independent Study course development for all University of Missouri campuses. The records include course 'mock-ups', incomplete courses, and cancelled courses. Also included are records related to the University of Missouri-Kansas City's Missouri Safe Schools Showcase Program run by UMKC's Missouri Center for Safe Schools.

Series 5. - C:18/6/4
This Series contains teaching material from the University of Missouri Extension Division's Center for Independent Study, (ca. 1996-2002). The material consists of VHS video tapes containing programs for use in the course English Topics 101. The programs come from The Twilight of the Sioux, a telecourse developed for distance education in conjunction with the University's English Department and featuring the work of John G. Neihardt. The Series contains the following individual programs: "Black Elk: Holy Man," "Battle in the Blizzard, "Thanking the Food and Sharp Nose," "Sun Dance," and "Introduction to the Indian Wars."

Series 6. - C:18/6/5 (A14-70; A17-40)
This Series contains administrative and other records of the University of Missouri Extension Division's Center for Independent Study (CIS), (ca. 1972-2010). The records consist of the following types and topics: memoranda, correspondence, reports, meeting agendas, curriculm design, website, awards, surveys, program review, the American Association for Collegiate Independent Study (AACIS), Computer Assisted Lesson Service (CALS), and the Department of Defense's Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education System (DANTES).

Note to Archivist: All records in Accession A14-70 and some in Accession A17-40 were created and received by Gera Burton during her tenure in the Center for Independent Study, including her time as the Associate Director of the Center for Distance and Independent Study. A number of records from Accession A17-40 came from the period Roger G. Young was Director of the CIS and Video Credit Courses.

Series 7. - C:18/6/6
This Series contains printed and duplicated material created by the Center for Independent Study and its successor units, (1984-2018). The material includes newsletters, brochures, handbooks, and reports. Some of the unit names represented by printed and duplicated material in this Series are the Center for Distance and Independent Study, MU Direct, Mizzou Online, and MU High School.

This Series contains records created and received by the Marketing and Communications Unit of the Center for Independent Study and its successor units, (1952-2019). The records consist of the following types and topics: printed and duplicated materials and packets, including brochures, flyers, booklets, catalogs, newsletters, and other publications, production files, annual reports and plans, progress reports, marketing, advertising, statistics, publishing competitions and awards, the American Association for Collegiate Independent Study Conference, the Center for Independent Study retreat, press releases, and media clippings.
