Scope and Content Note
This Sub-Group holds office files of the Dean of the MU College of Veterinary Medicine (1885-1980). Included in this Sub-Group are office correspondence, administrative handbooks, annual reviews, meeting minutes of committees and councils, records of construction and maintenance of college facilities, student directories, student newsletters, development fund documents, material relating to the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station, Christmas letters from the Dean to various alumni, records of laboratory animal resources, a copy of the "Copeland Report," records pertaining to a law suit brought by students against the Board of Curators concerning fees and tuition, and photographs of students, faculty, and facilities.
Series Descriptions:
Series 1. - C:17/1/1 (A89-19; A13-44; A15-59)
This Series holds College of Veterinary Medicine Dean's Office records (ca. 1952-1985). Included in this Series are office correspondence, administrative handbooks, annual reviews, meeting minutes of committees and councils, records of construction and maintenance of college facilities, student directories, student newsletters, College of Veterinary Medicine development fund documents, material relating to the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station, Christmas letters from the Dean to various alumni, records of laboratory animal resources, a copy of the "Copeland Report," records pertaining to a law suit brought by students against the Board of Curators concerning fees and tuition. The Series also contains Cabinet meeting minutes, (1963-1981), and budget and fiscal records, (1969-1985), including staff operating budgets.

Note to Researcher: Many of these records were generated during the tenure of Dean Kenneth D. Weide (1973-1981), however, some date to the tenures of earlier Deans and even before the College of Veterinary Medicine gained independent from the College of Agriculture in 1949.

Series 2. - C:17/1/2 and C:17/11/2 (A89-19)
This Series holds photographs of students, faculty, and facilities of the UMC College of Veterinary Medicine (ca. 1885-1980). Included in the Series are photographs of student classes at commencements, award banquets and presentations, classroom views with students, aerial views of the UMC campus, Equine Center, and other Veterinary Medicine facilities. Also included in the Series are photographs of graduate students in seminars and the membership of MU chapters of the national honor fraternities in Veterinary Medicine, Delta Theta Sigma (ca. 1913) and Alpha Zeta (ca. 1908), as well as a wooden hazing paddle. Some of these records were generated during the tenure of Dean Kenneth D. Weide (1973-1981), however, some date to the tenures of earlier Deans and even before the College of Veterinary Medicine gained independent from the College of Agriculture in 1949.

Series 3. - C:17/1/3 (A07-79)
This Series contains records created and received by the Special Events unit in the College of Veterinary Medicine, (1989-2007). The records consist for the most part of printed and duplicated material related to the Gentle Doctor Benefit, including auction catalogs, a volunteer staff manual, forms, and brochures. Also included in the Series is fundraising material for the Barkley House.

This Series contains administrative records of the College of Veterinary Medicine, (ca. 1988-2006). The records consist of promotion and tenure files for faculty [RESTRICTED] and departmental and divisional promotion and tenure guidelines, (1988-1995, 2002).

Series 5. - C:17/1/5 (A12-103)
This Series contains administrative records created and received by the College of Veterinary Medicine, (1991, 1997-1998, 2006). The records consist of the following types and topics: "The Case for Restoration of Full Accreditation," (1991), College of Veterinary Medicine Annual Review, (1997), College of Veterinary Medicine Departmental Self Study and Strategic Plan along with a Unit and Select Committee Self Study, (November 1998), a College of Veterinary Medicine Self-Study, (1998), an American Veterinary Medical Association - Council of Education College of Veterinary Medicine Self Study Appendix, (2006), and a Summary Profile of the College of Veterinary Medicine's Class of 2014, (2010).

Series 6. - C:17/1/6 (A13-111)
This Series contains accreditation and self-study records for the College of Veterinary Medicine, (1983-1984). The records include a self-study for the College, a self-study for the departments and committees, an annual review, outline of professional courses, a course catalog, and a report on research efforts.

Series 7. - C:17/1/7 (A24-25)
This Series contains correspondence of the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri, (2023-2024). The correspondence is from Interim Dean Leah Cohn.
Note to Researcher: This Series is currently unprocessed. Until completely processed and inventoried, portions may not be fully available to researchers. As such, Series 7 may contain records which are confidential and restricted. See the restrictions note at the end of this finding aid.
Note to Archivist: Cohn was interim dean from August of 2023 through July of 2024.

Restrictions Note: The Archives of the University of Missouri-Columbia is required by law and Board of Curator's policy to restrict access to some files and information. Student records are held as confidential under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and by University policy. Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
