This Sub-Group contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine Dean's Office. Included in the Sub-Group are correspondence, committee records, and records pertaining to faculty, students, professional associations, research projects, budgetary matters, internships, scholarships, grants, nursing, construction and remodeling, draft deferments, course grading, admissions analysis, entrance and exit testing, the University Medical Center, equal opportunity policies, search committees, accreditation, and every aspect of the day-to-day administration of the School of Medicine.

This summary description has been enlarged to a full inventory. Please follow this link to reach the inventory. This former Series contains administrative records of the UMC School of Medicine Dean's Office, (1960s-1970s). These records were produced primarily during the tenure of Dean Vernon E. Wilson, who served as dean of the School of Medicine from 1959 to 1967.

Series 2. - C:14/1/2 (A78-69)
This Series contains administrative records of the UMC School of Medicine Dean's Office, (1959-1982). Included in this Series is correspondence created and received by the dean and assistant and associate deans as well as other administrators of the School of Medicine. Topics include construction of the University Medical Center, allocation of equipment, housing of students, internships, UMC Medical Center visitors, budgetary matters, grants, fellowships, loan funds, allocation of space, expansion, relations with hospitals outside the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics organization, and state, federal and international agencies and programs. Additional correspondence in the Series pertains to course grading systems, student life and activities, acceptance, non-acceptance and expulsion of students, relations with MU's central administration, professional meetings and symposia, hiring searches, promotion and tenure, discipline of faculty members, pay schedules and benefits, sabbaticals, vacations, hospital staff concerns, and purchase of aircraft.

This Series contains the UMC Medical Center dedication service guest register and a copy of the dedication program (1956). The register contains signatures of prominent political, medical, and academic personages in attendance at the dedication of the MU Medical Center.

This Series contains records of the UMC School of Medicine Admissions Committee, (1952-1957). Included in this Series are interview schedules, applicant biographies, and correspondence relating to admission or rejection, withdrawal of applicants, applicant test scores, and reports of false application information.

This Series contains UMC School of Medicine Dean's Office student files, (1940-1951). Included in this Series are correspondence, student transcripts, student information cards, student photographs, biographical information, entrance test scores, admission evaluations, exit evaluations, and information on where students transferred to complete their medical training (MU did not maintain a four-year medical school during this period).

This Series contains records of the UMC School of Medicine's Dean's Office, (1991-1994). Included in this Series are records relating to the Associate Dean of Research of the School of Medicine. Materials included are: individuals' files; Research Council applications; project proposals; associated publications; letters from the Research Board to applicants that grant the proposals; analysis of the research grants; and rejected proposals that did not receive funding.

This Series contains several documents pertaining to the administration of the UMC School of Medicine, (1936-1959). Included in this Series are copies of the 1950 University Hospital Annual Report, the 1949 Missouri State Crippled Children's Service report, the report of the Department of Nursing Education, (1949-1950), Student Health Service reports, (1936-1940), and Medical Student Admissions Analysis reports, (1953-1959). Also included in the Series are materials pertaining to student registration, curriculum offerings, and student draft deferments.

This Series contains records of the Dean's Office of the UMC School of Medicine, (1989-1991). The Series contains an internal review of the Department of Child Health conducted and presented to Dean Lester Bryant in 1989. Also included in the Series are study documents supporting the Student Health Prepaid Fee proposal. The notebook of supporting documentation was provided to Chancellor Monroe and most sections were attached to the Board of Curators' Papers (1991).

Series 19. - C:14/1/11 (A05-30; A05-35)
This Series contains a portrait of Marcus Pinson Neal, (1956), painted by Daniel MacMorris. The Series also includes the identification plaque for the painting, (ca. 1958).

Note to Researcher: M. Pinson Neal was appointed Professor of Pathology in 1922, a position he held until his retirement in 1958. After retirement, Neal continued in various functions in the University's health services, including those of Emeritus Professor of Pathology and Consulting Physician in Student Health Services. Neal served as Acting Dean of the Faculty of the School of Medicine from 1951 until 1953. During this tenure as Dean, Neal also was Medical Consultant and Executive Officer of the State Crippled Children's Service. Neal died in August 1973. The Alumni Association of the University of Missouri Medical School decided to commission the portrait at its annual meeting in 1955. The painting was presented to the Board of Curators of the University in April 1956 and the Board officially accepted it with instructions to place it "in an appropriate place in the School of Medicine" at its May meeting that year. Note to Archivist: This painting was received by University Archives from the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Studies which in turn received the painting from the Health Sciences Library. As the painting was originally given to the School of Medicine by its Alumni Association (see 'Note to Researcher' above), it has therefore has been assigned to the Record Sub-Group of the highest administrative unit within the School.

This Series contains administrative records created and received by the Office of the Dean of the Medical School at the University of Missouri-Columbia, (1976-2003). The records include correspondence, memoranda, meeting agendas and minutes, applications, reports, and surveys.
