Record Group: 4 UW Scope and Content Note(A18-38) Biographical NoteAllan Walker Purdy was born July 26, 1914 in Macon County, Missouri. The youngest of six, he graduated from Macon High School in 1932. Purdy entered the University of Missouri in 1934 after working for a few years. Purdy graduated from MU with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1938 from the College of Agriculture. He achieved his Master of Science degree in horticulture from MU in 1939. During WWII Purdy entered the U.S. Army, flying with the Army Service Corps. He transferred to the U.S. Navy, was commissioned as an officer, and captained a patrol torpedo boat. Purdy served as State Extension horticulturist for the University of Missouri from 1946 to 1949 before becoming the assistant to the Dean of the College of Agriculture from 1949 until 1958. As assistant, Purdy helped students find part-time jobs, locate scholarships, and secure loans. He began lobbying in the 1950s for congressional representatives to consult financial aid professionals who actually dealt with students applying for financial aid. From 1958 to 1971, Purdy was the Director of Aids and Awards at University of Missouri-Columbia. Purdy's transfer from the College of Agriculture to Student Aids and Awards thrust him into the nascent student financial aid community, encouraging his correspondence amongst many financial aid professionals at other colleges and universities. The National Defense Education Act passed in 1958, and Purdy was involved in its legislative and regulatory evolution for almost two decades. He was instrumental in the formulation and implementation of the Midwest Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, and was the Association's second president, serving from 1963 to 1964. Purdy helped draft the Higher Education Act of 1965. As first president Purdy was largely responsible for the propagation and organization of the National Association of Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) from 1966 until 1969. He frequently dealt with Congress and other Financial Aid administrators as both president of and, later, a member of NASFAA. Starting in 1971 Purdy became the University of Missouri System's Director of Scholarship and Student Financial Aid Services, a position he held until retirement. He helped draft the original College Work-Study legislation and the Educational Opportunity and Guaranteed Student Loan laws. Purdy received a presidential appointment to the Board of Directors for the Student Loan Marketing Association from 1972 until 1978. After his retirement from MU in 1979, Purdy worked with many organizations such as the Higher Education Loan Authority of Missouri, Midwest Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators and NASFAA, remaining active with the financial aid community around the University of Missouri for the rest of his life. Allan W. Purdy died in Columbia, Missouri on October 14, 2010, at the age of 96. Series Descriptions:This Record Sub-Group is divided into three series.
