Scope and Content Note

This Record Sub-Group contains administrative files of the Office of the Dean of the University of Missouri-Columbia's College of Engineering. Included in this Sub-Group are office correspondence files, budget requests, photographs, accreditation self-studies, certificates, publicity materials, scripts of speeches, faculty personnel files, development fund files, scholarship records, promotion and tenure guidelines, promotion and tenure files, committee files, and departmental files.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:9/1/1 (A78-61; A82-24)
This Series holds vitae for faculty members, (1927-1969) of the College of Engineering’s Departments of Chemical Engineering, Sanitary Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Nuclear Engineering. Also included in the Series are (1) 4x5" negative, and (3) 4x5" black and white prints of Professor Lewis N. Walker, taken 13 February 1975, and (2) 4x5" negatives and (5) 4x5" black and white prints of Professor Donald L. Waidelich, taken October 1976.

Please follow this link to reach the inventory. This former Series contains administrative records, black-and-white photographs and negatives created and collected by the Dean's Office in the College of Engineering (ca. 1906-1968, 1955-1965).

Series 3. - C:9/1/3 (A86-88; A86-128; A98-89; A03-63; A06-39; A09-69; A11-73)
This Series contains administrative records created or received by College of Engineering Dean, William R. Kimel, (1948-1993). Included are correspondence, memoranda, annual reports, speech scripts, and a database pertaining to "management operations" of the College. This Series also contains photographs, including two of Kimel, (1979, 1982), and a few of his professional colleagues and associates such as June and Jim Beauchamp, John O'Connor, Charles Slivinski, Charles Zurherde, Charles Willhite, Bud Moulder, Sam Dwyer and Jack Morgan. In addition, the Series includes a copy of Kimel's curriculum vitae and an audio tape recording of a meeting of the UMC faculty, (1971), led by Chancellor Herbert Schooling and held in response to University of Missouri President Brice Ratchford's Role and Scope Policy Statement that outlined the future scope and level of academic program offerings for the Columbia Campus. Series 3 also contains a number of Kimel's awards and honors certificates and plaques as well as a copy of Kimel's dissertation, (1956).

This Series holds College of Engineering personnel files for faculty members who have resigned, retired, or been terminated (1952-1986). Materials in this Series include related correspondence, staff evaluations, vitae, student evaluations, promotions and tenure files, and departmental chairperson evaluations. This Series also contains personnel files for some members of the University of Missouri-Kansas City Engineering faculty.

This Series holds faculty evaluations (1971-1991) for the UMC College of Engineering's Departments of Chemical, Civil, Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical and Computer Engineering, as well as faculty promotion and tenure guidelines and dossiers (1969-1980).

This Series holds College of Engineering Dean's Office administrative files (1983-1990). Included in the Series are correspondence and records pertaining to standing committees, annual reports of research within individual engineering departments, departmental affairs and concerns, and day-to-day operations of the UMC College of Engineering. This Series also contains faculty records of meetings, awards, development, promotion and tenure. Topics of general correspondence include: the National Oil Program; the Alumni Organization; the Water Resources Research Center; the Department of Transportation; the Regional Economic Development Commission; the Capsule Pipeline Research Center; the Power Electronics Research Center; the Sun Tiger Solar Car; the Rockwell and Trump Project, including the Readiness Review; the National Renewable Energy Laboratory; the American Society of Engineering Education; the National Institute for Engineering Management; the Competence Task Force; and the Engineering East Building. Administrative files of the various College of Engineering Departments and of Chancellor Brouder are also included in the Series.

This Series contains administrative records of the Dean’s Office of the College of Engineering, (1967-1991). Among the records found in the Series are annual reports, fiscal year reports, research updates, correspondence, various committee meeting agendas and minutes, program reviews, long-range plans, and publications. Topics covered in the records include the proposed merger of the Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Departments, course and curriculum changes, the new Engineering Building, the Design Productivity Center, the Power Electronics Research Center, the University’s Sesquicentennial, student organizations, professorships, video courses and supplemental fees. There are a few issues of The Shamrock included in the Series.

Series 9. - C:9/1/NP (A00-21)
This Series consists of one bound volume containing UMC College of Engineering Dean's Office administrative files (1985). Included in this volume are faculty meeting minutes, departmental correspondence and memoranda, reports by the Educom Consulting Group and the Commission on Institutions of Higher Education North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and the Constitution of the Graduate Professional Council. Topics covered in the volume include; Intercampus Telecommunications Networks, Midwestern Universities Alliance, STEPS (Student Training in Engineering Problem Solving), Engineering Extension and Continuing Education, and proposed changes in the Agricultural Engineering Program.

Series 11. - C:9/1/8 (A03-45)
This Series contains records from the Dean's Office of the College of Engineering, (1943-2000). The records consist of certificates and related correspondence received by Dean William Kimel during his professional career. The certificates come from such organizations as the State of Missouri Department of Economic Development, (1998, 2000), the Society of the Sigma Xi, (1955), the Governor of Kansas Nuclear Energy Advisory Council, (1964, 1967), and the University of Missouri College of Engineering Alumni Association. Also included in the Series are some color and black-and-white photographs of Kimel at various functions.

This Series contains administrative records and general correspondence from the Dean's Office of the College of Engineering, (1989-2002). Included in the administrative files are the following record types and topics: correspondence and memoranda to and from various departments in Engineering, including copies to the Dean of departmental correspondence; correspondence and memoranda regarding various University and University System offices and units, including University Affairs, the Board of Curators, University President George Russell, Campus Facilities, Campus Computing, and Governmental Affairs; committee meeting agendas and minutes for the various College departments; a Review of the Food Science and Engineering Unit, (1994); annual reports; newsletters; press clippings; and news releases. Some of the topics found in the correspondence files, (1994-1996), are the following: the Capsule Pipeline Research Center and its director Henry Liu; the American Conference of Academic Deans; alumni and alumni organization; faculty and alumni awards; freshmen programs; the Deans' Institute; Faculty Council; the Power Research Center; legislators; Particulate System research; the Missouri Corporation for Science and Technology; the Industrial and Technological Development Center; Surface Plasma Technology Center; video courses; and waste management. Also included in this Series are Promotion and Tenure files [RESTRICTED], (1990-1997), and personnel files of retired or terminated faculty [RESTRICTED], (1989-2002).

This Series contains scholarship records from the Dean's Office of the College of Engineering, (1993-1997). The records include materials for upperclass and underclass scholarships. Types of scholarship records contained in this Series are: applications (accepted, declined, and rejected), award letters, fiscal records, recipient lists, department awards, scholarship committee meeting records, and reports.

Series 14. - C:9/1/11 (A06-02)
This Series contains administrative records created or received by the Office of the Dean of the College of Engineering, (1993). The records consist of self-study questionnaire reports for program review submitted to the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. The Series contains reports for the College of Engineering as well as the following departments: Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Also included are questionnaire reports for the following Kansas City programs: Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

Series 15. - C:9/1/12 (A11-20)
This Series contains records created or received by Howard Burton Shaw, Dean of Engineering, (1896, 1907-1911). The records consist of correspondence and miscellaneous documents regarding fire protection at the University of Missouri. Included among the records are a broadside entitled "The Organization of a Fire Brigade," (1896); lists of fire extinguishers found in the various campus buildings, a price list for pipes and hydrants located in various campus buildings, fire procedures, a report, recommendations, and minutes of the Committee on Fire Protection, and a General Order of the Missouri State Military School, (1911).

Student records are held as confidential under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and by University policy. Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
