Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains record files and other materials produced or gathered by the University of Missouri College of Education Assistant Dean's Office. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence, program reports, annual reports, bulletins, minutes of meetings of the College of Education faculty, minutes of meetings of the C.O.E. Policy Committee, minutes of meetings of the University Community Teachers Association, reports of the Missouri State Superintendent of Schools, Board of Curators' recommendations, documents relating to hiring of non-academic staff and faculty, and photographs of College of Education Deans, E. L. Ripley, Grace Bibb, J.P. Blanton, W.H. Irion, and Loran G. Townsend.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:8/4/1 (A77-57)
This Series holds official reports of the Missouri State Superintendent of Schools (ca. 1891-1922). Included in these reports are brief examinations of the status of the University of Missouri's Columbia and Rolla campuses. Noted are faculty appointments, resignations and deaths, creation and reorganization of College and Departments, the inauguration of University Extension, plans for rebuilding MU after the fire which destroyed old Academic Hall, enrollment statistics, and changing entrance requirements.

Series 2. - C:8/4/2 (A77-57)
This Series contains materials relating to Board of Curators recommendations and actions, hiring and appointments of nonacademic staff and faculty (ca 1928-1969). Included in this Series are correspondence files, personnel information forms, changes of appointment records, and recommendations of the department. Other topics in the Series include budget matters, scholarships, and funding for positions.

Note to Researcher: Series 2 contains some records which are confidential and restricted. See the restrictions note at the end of this finding aid. This Series contains records pertaining to the University of Missouri-Rolla as well as the University of Missouri-Columbia and for Summer sessions as well as regular academic semesters.

Series 3. - C:8/4/3 (A77-57; A87-105; A88-27; A94-78; A96-28)
This Series holds minutes of meetings of the faculty of College of Education (ca. 1918-1990), of the College of Education and Graduate School's Educational Policy Committee (ca. 1922-1982), and of the Educational Conference (ca. 1953-1959). Also included in the Series are reports of the Dean of Faculty (ca. 1945-1985), of the Director of Summer Sessions (ca. 1944-1968), of Cooperative Graduate Programs between UMC, Southeast Missouri State College, Southwest Missouri State College, and Northwest Missouri State College (ca. 1957-1965). This Series also contains the minutes of the University Community Teachers Association, (1976-1985).

This Series contains program reports, course outlines, newsletters, studies, histories, photographs, bulletins, and correspondence relating to the MU College of Education (ca. 1916-1977).

Series 5. - C:8/4/5 (A90-94)
This Series contains materials collected by Assistant Dean Jo Behymer to document and exhibit the history of the College of Education and its predecessors. Included in this Series is a front page of The Columbia Daily Tribune announcing the end of the Pacific War and the resignation of Dean Irion and the appointment of Dean Townsend. This Series also includes two exhibit panels containing photographs of women students in 1899, Dean of the Normal School Grace Bibb (1878-1883), first Dean of the College of Normal Instruction Erastus Ripley (1867-1978), Dean of the Department of Education J.P. Blanton (1891-1998), Dean of the School of Education Theophil William Henry Irion (1930-1945), and Dean of the College of Education Loran Townsend (1946-1963). Also included in the Series are a variety of clippings about College of Education faculty and programs (1964-1990).

Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
