Scope and Content Note
This Record Sub-Group contains administrative records created or received by the Division of Biological Sciences. The records pertain to the Natural History Museum Outreach Program and include grant records, correspondence, scripts, photographic materials, and audio tape. The Sub-Group also contains records of the Division's Herbarium.
Series Descriptions:
Series 1. - C:6/36/6 (A16-11)
This Series contains administrative and other records pertaining to the Natural History Museum Outreach Program of the University of Missouri's Division of Biological Sciences, (1974-2007, bulk 1979-1981). The records consist of Institute of Museum Services (IMS) grant files and other funding records, correspondence and memoranda, scripts for the program's displays, research files, personnel records [RESTRICTED], photographic slides and negatives, and audio tapes. The Outreach Program was intended to be displayed in communities throughout Missouri by bringing "key components of natural history museums and experimental laboratories at the University of Missouri-Columbia to citizens who live in rural areas of the State." Among its display themes were "The Tall Grass Prairie - A Living Sea," "Endangered Birds and Mammals of Missouri," "Poisonous Plants and Animals," and "Miracle Grains - Products of Genetic and Taxonomic Research." The Outreach Program was initially financed through an IMS grant obtained by Professor James E. Carrel. Gary Reese served as the project's lead designer.

Series 2. - C:6/36/7 (A16-18; A18-02; A21-59)
This Series contains administrative records of the University of Missouri's Division of Biological Sciences, (1955-2019). The records consist of faculty personnel files [RESTRICTED] for faculty in the Division. The Series also contains a few records of the Personnel Committee, (1987-1988), and of post-doctoral instructors.

Series 3. - C:6/36/9 (A16-38)
This Series contains administrative and other records of the University of Missouri Herbarium, (ca. 1935-2015). The records consist of administrative records, including yearly and five-year reports, budgets and expenditures, information requests, correspondence, memoranda, material pertaining to David Baxter Dunn and Ernest Jesse Palmer, collecting permits, a guestbook, and miscellaneous printed and duplicated material. The Herbarium was established in 1896 and renamed the Dunn-Palmer Herbarium in 1994 after two of its most important contributors: Ernest J. Palmer, who donated over 30,000 specimens to the Herbarium in 1962, and David B. Dunn, who served as the Herbarium's curator from 1956 until his retirement from the University of Missouri in 1987. Robin C. Kennedy, who facilitated the transfer of the material in this Series, followed Dunn as curator of the Herbarium, serving in that capacity until the closing of the Herbarium in 2016. The Herbarium's specimens and other relevant records were added to the collection of the Missouri Botanical Garden in 2015.

Series 4. - C:6/36/12 (A19-50; A21-60)
This Series contains administrative and other records of the Division of Biological Sciences at the University of Missouri, (ca. 1941-2013). The records consist of the following types and topics: Self-Study and Five-Year Plan Review documents, (2002, 2007), Program reviews and plans, Botany Woods Preserve, Biological Sciences Divisional retreats, a National Science Foundation Toxic Substance Project, (1976), University of Missouri's Phi Eta Chapter of the Beta Beta Beta Biological Society, building renovation and conversion, newspaper clippings, off-prints, and correspondence, much of which is to and from Abraham Eisenstark. The Series also includes scrapbooks documenting activities of the Division, (1985-1999), and including newspaper clippings and commencement and other event programs. One of the scrapbooks is dedicated to the centennial anniversary of the construction of LeFevre Hall, (2013), and contains photographs and historical information about the building, as well as biographical information about faculty members and their laboratories in LeFevre Hall.

Series 5. - C:6/36/13 (A21-55)
This Series contains records pertaining to the Division of Biological Sciences Jubilee lecture given by Emeritus Professor of Biological Science George P. Smith on August 26th, 2021. The records consist of a copy of the corrected version of Smith's lecture and of a video recording of the seminar lecture.

Restrictions Note: The Archives of the University of Missouri-Columbia is required by law and Board of Curator's policy to restrict access to some files and information. Student records are held as confidential under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and by University policy. Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
