This Sub-Group contains records relating to the life and career of University of Missouri-Columbia Professor Emeritus of English, William Harwood Peden. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence, manuscripts, galley proofs, and press releases. Among Peden's correspondence are letters exchanged with prominent poets, novelists, artists, publishers, and editors. Other correspondence within this Sub-Group pertains to persons appearing on campus as guest lecturers or participants in writing conferences and poetry readings (photographs of some guests are included). Some of Professor Peden's personal correspondence is included as well. This Sub-Group also contains Peden's unpublished manuscripts, published works, reprints, programs and brochures for UMC's Missouri Writers Workshop, and correspondence relating to published works, such as The American Short Story, The Jefferson Monument at the University of Missouri, Night in Funland and Other Stories, Twilight at Monticello.

Note to Archivist: With the exception of Accession A13-102 of two 1/4" audio tapes, the records in this Sub-Group came directly from Professor Peden in six separate donations, dating from 1982 through 1996. These materials had been stored at the Peden home after Professor Peden's retirement from the regular faculty of the English Department.

Biographical Note:

William Harwood Peden was a distinguished writer, scholar, and faculty member of the UMC English Department for over fifty years. Professor Peden came to the University of Missouri in 1946 and was a member of the faculty until his retirement in 1979. Soon afterward, he was designated Emeritus Professor of English. From 1958 through 1960, Professor Peden also served as the Director of the University of Missouri Press. Professor Peden died July 23, 1999, in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Series One contains Professor Peden's personal and professional correspondence.

Series Two is comprised of class lectures Peden created during his years as a professor.

Series Three holds a variety of manuscripts, galley proofs, and published works authored by Professor Peden.

Series Four is a collection of news articles, photographs, posters, microfilm, and audiotapes pertaining to Professor Peden and his work.
