Scope and Content Note

(A98-108)
This Record Sub-Group contains correspondence, photographs, slides and clippings regarding the Lowry Mall Sculpture Project at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Among the topics covered by records in this Sub-Group are the search for prospective artists, solicitation for funding and the location of the sculptures.

Historical Note:

The Lowry Mall Sculpture Project consists of three sculptures, "Urania" by Anthony Padovano, "Inert Stabile," by Dennis Chegwidden and "Yielding Spire," by John Brough Miller. Only Miller's sculpture remains on Lowry Mall. Chegwidden's "Inert Stabile" has been moved to the grassy knoll in front of Ellis Library and Padovano's "Urania" has been moved to a landscaped area near Stankowski field.

The selection and installation of these sculptures was overseen by the Visual Arts Task Force, which included prominent School of Fine Arts faculty members and patrons of the arts. Task force members were:

Professor Lawrence Rugolo, Chairman
Professor William Bondeson
Professor James Miller
