Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Arts and Science's Department of Sociology. Included in the Sub-Group are correspondence files, grant applications, studies, reports, faculty publications and manuscripts, budget materials, faculty meeting minutes, student handbooks, memoranda, and a group photograph of departmental faculty and staff.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:6/37/4 (A88-76; A90-21; A93-95)
This Series includes administrative records of the UMC Department of Sociology (ca. 1969-1982). Included in the Series are correspondence files, grant applications, faculty project reports, budget materials, faculty meeting minutes, student handbooks, and memoranda.

Series 2. - C:6/37/2
This Series contains records of the UMC Department of Sociology (ca. 1968). Included in the Series are copies of a report entitled "Social Participation of Older People in the Small Town: an Interim Report," by Professors H.A. Rosencranz, C.T. Pihlblad, and T.E. McNevin. Also included in the Series are forms to be used in a follow-up study to be entitled, "The Older Person in the Small Town: a Seven Year Follow-Up Study."

Series 3. - C:6/37/1 (A77-9)
This Series holds a black-and-white photograph of staff members of the MU Department of Sociology with MU president Frederick A. Middlebush and Department of Sociology Chair, Professor Noel P. Gist (ca. 1950). This photograph was made in President Middlebush's office on the occasion of the publication of a work entitled, Missouri: Its Resources, People, and Institutions, 1950. All staff members pictured had contributed to the work. Also included in this Series is a copy of the above mentioned publication.

This Series contains records of the Celebrating 100 Years of MU Sociology, 1900-2000, Centennial Symposium sponsored by the UMC College of Arts and Science Sociology Department (September 2000). Included in the Series are a program, a timeline of the MU Divestment movement, which involved many Sociology Department faculty and student members (1978-1987), and faculty biographical sketches. Biographical sketches include: Barbara J. Bank, Bob Beasley, Ken Benson, Bruce J. Biddle, Barbara Brents, Al DiChiara, Irwin Deutscher, Craig Eckert, John Galliher, Donald Granberg, Helgi Gunnlaugsson, Allen Grimshaw, Robert Habenstein, Peter M. Wright, E. L. Morgan, Charles A. Ellwood, and Arthur W. Nebel.

Series 5. - C:6/37/6 (A02-126)
This Series contains the original copy-edited manuscript of Small Property Versus Big Government: Social Origins of the Property Tax Revolt by Clarence Y. H. Lo, Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. The manuscript is about 550 pages in length and dates from ca. 1990. A copy of the book, published by the University of California Press, Berkeley in 1990, is held by Ellis Library, University of Missouri-Columbia. A copy of the paperback edition (1995) of the book is part of the Series. The Series also includes a cover letter from the University of California Press.
