Scope and Content Note
This Sub-Group contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Arts and Science's Department of Mathematics. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence files, employment applications, committee materials, departmental reports, bibliographies of faculty publications, faculty publications, faculty evaluations, grade books, course assignment schedules, lists of degrees awarded, honorary fraternity records, personnel files, and course evaluations.
Series Descriptions:
Series 1. - C:6/28/1 (A81-32)
This Series contains UMC Department of Mathematics administrative records, (ca. 1931-1981) created, principally, during the tenure of Departmental Chair, Professor Paul Burcham, (1948-1966). Included in the Series are correspondence files, employment applications, committee materials, departmental annual reports, research project reports, bibliographies of faculty publications, and faculty evaluations. Also included in this Series are some of Professor Burcham's personal papers and personal correspondence.

Series 2. - C:6/28/2 (A86-33; A87-57; A89-68; A90-52; A91-50)
This Series contains administrative records of the UMC Department of Mathematics, (ca. 1940-1981). Included in this Series are a sampling of academic personnel files for departmental faculty and graduate teaching assistants, lists of students and courses taken, course instructor schedules, and course evaluations. Also included in the Series are files pertaining to Pi Mu Epsilon (national mathematics honorary fraternity) with items such as membership lists, meeting minutes, financial records, memorabilia, and copies of the Pi Mu Epsilon Journal dating from 1964 through 1981. Additionally, this Series contains a partial list of MA and Ph.D. degrees awarded by the UMC Department of Mathematics from 1899 through 1957.

Series 3. - C:6/28/NP (A00-138; A01-49)
This Series contains records created or received by the UMC Department of Mathematics. The Series includes meeting minutes and supporting documentation, reports, program reviews, and correspondence. Meeting minutes in this Series include the College of Arts and Science Curriculum Committee, General Faculty meetings, and the Tenure Committee. Correspondence with Ted Tarkow, (1994, 1995) and Larry Clark, (1990-1994) is included in this Series as well as correspondence of the department, and general memoranda and correspondence with the Registrar. This Series also includes program reviews, (1986-1991), annual Consultation Reports on outside consulting done by faculty, (1985-1991), and the Departmental Annual Report for 1982.

Series 4. - C:6/28/4 (A02-69; A04-100)
This Series contains records created or received by the UMC Department of Mathematics, (1965, 1995-1998). The Series includes departmental correspondence and correspondence with Deans, the Chancellor, and other administrators. Some of the correspondence is from Department Chairman Elias Saab, (1995-1996). Other records in the Series are faculty meeting minutes, (1996-1997), visiting faculty files, an Arts and Science Alumni survey, and a space survey. Also included in the Series is a proposal for a new mathematics building, (ca. 1965).

This Series contains faculty and other academic personnel records of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Missouri, (1950-2012). The records [RESTRICTED] consist of faculty files, including, among others, cumulative updates, Faculty Accomplishment System (FAS) reports, curricula vitae, and promotion and tenure material. The Series also contains visiting professor and postdoc files [RESTRICTED].

Series 6. - C:6/28/6 (A13-69)
This Series contains administrative records created and received by the Department of Mathematics at the University of Missouri, (1975-2005, bulk 1995-2000). The records consist of the following types and topics: correspondence, memoranda, reports, faculty meeting files [RESTRICTED], (1998-2004), various conferences, including Show Me and the American Mathematical Society, and a departmental self-study, (1999). Many of these records date from the chairmanship of Elias Saab.

Series 7. - C:6/28/7 (A13-113)
This Series contains video (DVD-R) of the Miller Family Distinguished Lecture Series, (2007, 2008). Included in the lecture series are Michael Atiyah presenting "Mathematics: Invention or Discovery" and "An Unsolved Problem in Elementary Geometry" and Peter D. Lax presenting "The Life and Times of John von Neumann" and "Harmonic Analysis Applied to PDEs". Series 7 also includes signed release forms for the lectures.

Series 8. - C:6/28/8 (A14-88)
This Series contains faculty papers from the Department of Mathematics at the University of Missouri, (1950-1998). The records consist of offprints, manuscripts, and correspondence. Much of the material, including most of the correspondence, comes from MU Professor Leo Jerome Lange. Many of the offprints are from Professor Clinton Petty and his colleague Erwin Lutwak. The series also includes a corrected carbon copy of Herbert Busemann's paper, "Volume in terms of concurrent cross sections."

Student records are held as confidential under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and by University policy. Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
