Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group holds printed and duplicated materials of the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Arts and Science. Included in the Sub-Group are pamphlets, annual reports, faculty rule books, catalogs, bulletins, programs, newsletters, magazines, monographs, and faculty directories.

Note to Researcher: Some of the material in this Record Sub-Group is specific to individual departments within the College of Arts and Science. Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:6/1/3
This Series contains copies of the annual reports of the UMC College of Arts and Science for academic years 1935-1936 and 1968-1969. Also included in the Series are summaries of the annual reports of the UMC Deans, Directors, and Administrative Officers for academic years 1939-1940 and 1940-1941.

This Series holds a partial collection of catalogs and bulletins produced by every department, office and division of the UMC College of Arts and Science (ca. 1905--). Also included is a Political Sciences Schedule (ca. 1901-1902), examples of College of Arts and Science "Honor Rank Lists" and announcements, and bulletins from the Bible College of Missouri including bulletins from after the college was renamed The Missouri School of Religion (ca. 1936-1968).

This Series holds copies of publications of the Missouri Archaeological Society, (ca. 1946-2004). Included in this Series are, among others, copies of the Society's Newsletter, (1947-1983), and Quarterly, (1984-2004), the Missouri Archaeologist, (1946-1984, with gaps), and the Memoir, (1972, 1974). Topics in these publications relate to Missouri and regional pre-history, surface survey projects, the ecology of prehistoric communities, Osteo-Archaeology, and research funded by the National Park Service and Environmental Protection Agency.

Note to Researcher: The Missouri Archaeological Society was founded in 1934. Jesse Wrench served as its first President. The Society was located at the University of Missouri-Columbia until November 2006 when it moved to Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri.

This Series contains copies of the Missouri Review, a journal of creative writing published by the UMC Department of English (ca. 1978-Present). Included in this publication are literary criticism, essays on literature, short fiction, and poetry. Also included with this Series is a copy of "The Rich Manifold," by Cleanth Brooks (a "Paul Anthony Brick Lecture Series" publication).

This Series contains copies of the UMC Department of English publication entitled Midlands (ca. 1957-1986, 1999). Included in the publication are short stories, poetry, and literary criticism. Some issues contain the work of Mahan Competition prize winners.

This Series holds copies of Missouri Honors Review, a publication of the UMC College of Arts and Science Honors Council (ca. 1964-1970). This publication was intended to encourage sound scholarship and clear expository writing among undergraduate honors students. Included in the publication are seminar papers, senior honors theses, and special project reports. The publication of Missouri Honors Review was co-sponsored by the Fund for the Advancement of Education of the Ford Foundation.

This Series contains a sampling of publications by staff members of the UMC Museum of Anthropology (ca. 1965-Present). Included in this Series are copies of Museum Briefs, Monographs in Anthropology, annual reports of the Museum of Anthropology, and miscellaneous publications. Authors of these works include Professors of Anthropology, Instructors, and Graduate Assistants in the Department. The miscellaneous works include handbooks, coloring books, and other non-research publications.

This Series consists of copies of the MU Graduate Philosophy Club publication Dianoia (ca. 1967-1971). Included in the publication are writings by graduate and undergraduate students of philosophy.

Series 10. - C:6/32/2 (A81-1)
This Series holds 34 bulletins published by the UMC Laws Observatory (ca. 1902-1921). Included in this Series are contemporary technical and statistical astronomical data. The first eight of these bulletins are photocopies, the rest are in pamphlet form. The last four of these bulletins were published under the name, Publications of the University of Missouri.

This Series contains a copy of the 1966 work entitled Biographical Directory of the Political Science Department University of Missouri: Faculty, Masters, and Doctors, 1902-1965, edited by David A. Leuthold, forward by Louis G. Kahle. Included in the publication is a history of the development of UMC's Political Science Department, short biographies of faculty members and students awarded postgraduate degrees, a list of departmental chairpersons, and lists of geographical listing of faculty members and students awarded postgraduate degrees arranged according to primary field of interest and to place of residence.

Series 12. - C:6/00/2
This Series contains one booklet edited by Edward M. Palmquist and Donald M. Drummond (1951). It is a collection of ten commentaries on college instruction compiled by the Committee for the Improvement of Instruction in the College of Arts and Science with the support of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. It contains submissions by Elmer Ellis, Thomas Brady, Loren Reid, Theodore W.H. Irion, Robert Daniel, students, and a Columbia attorney, Warren Welliver. Some of the titles include The Improvement of Classroom Morale and Tips on Making Tests.

This Series contains printed and duplicated material produced by the College of Arts and Sciences, (1974-1992). The Series consists of the alumni magazine for the College entitled Arts & Science. Issues included in the Series are the following: Fall 1974; Spring 1982; Spring 1983; Spring 1985; 1985-1986; 1986-1987; 1991-1992.

This Series contains printed and duplicated materials produced by or for the Economics Department in the College of Arts and Science, (1963-1991, 1999). Materials include brochures and pamphlets about the department, degree programs, and scholarships, as well as a sampling of newsletters created by the department.

Note to Researcher: Originally part of the College of Business and Public Administration, the Department of Economics was moved, along with the Department of Political Science, to the College of Arts and Science in 1975.

This Series contains general printed and duplicated material of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and its successor departments in the College of Arts and Science, (1910, 1965-1986). The material includes, among other record types, brochures, flyers, pamphlets, and publications, pertaining to recruitment, academic programs, development, coursework, and general information. Some of the titles are: Erste Schritte, An Aid to the Acquirement of the German of the Classroom, and Individually Guided German Studies - Elementary German 1.
