Record Group: 6 C
Record Sub-Group: 1
Records Title: UMC; College of Arts and Science; Department of Art; Frederick E. Shane Papers
Dates: 1920-1970
Volume: 2 cubic feet, 2.5 linear feet

Scope and Content Note

This Record Sub-Group contains the personal papers of Frederick E. Shane, noted Missouri artist and member of the faculty of the Department of Art at the University of Missouri-Columbia (ca 1932-1971). Included in this Sub-Group are his personal and professional correspondence, memos, articles, and reports. These papers relate to such topics as the exhibit and sale of his paintings, his work for the United States Army during World War II, and the design and painting of a mural for the Post Office in Eldon, Missouri.

Information concerning the Department of Art during Shane's tenure as Chairman, records relating to the publication of a book of his paintings, and biographical and financial documents are also included in the Sub-Group. Among Shane's collected correspondence are letters to and from such notable individuals as: Shaemas O'Sheel, Irving Stone, Thomas Hart Benton, Randall Davey, Adolph Dehn, Archie Musick, and Mort Walker.
Note to Researcher: For more records of Shane correspondence, see the following inventory C:6/14/2, University Archives Record Group 6 C, Sub-Group 46.
Note to Archivist: Due to the fragile nature of these records, it is preferred that the microfilm copies of these records be used for research purposes. The microfilmed version of this Sub-Group consists of 6 Microfilm Rolls (MFR) in 35mm format. The microfilm is stored in the microfilm cabinet (MFC) which is located in the University Archives Reading Room. Copies of the microfilm were made by University Archives at the request of Fredrick Shane in 1972 and sent to the Smithsonian Archives for American Art. Copies of relevant correspondence between Shane, SAAA, and University Archives were also sent to University Archives by SAAA in 2004; they are attached to the paper inventory.

Series Descriptions:

This Sub-Group is not divided into separate record series. Arrangement follows the record creator's original, alphabetical order.
