Scope and Content Note

(A10-05)
R.P. Dickey's voluminous writings are among the highlights of the collection, which includes drafts of plays dating from 1955 to 1993 and poems written between 1955 and ca. 2002. Bound works in the collection include Dickey's anthologies Running Lucky (1969), Acting Immortal (1970), and Collected Poems (1999). In addition, the collection contains other forms of Dickey's writing, including libretti and song lyrics, prose, reviews and criticism, newspaper articles and columns, and commentary on various political and social issues. Dickey retained comprehensive files of handwritten and typed notes, an examination of which provides insight into the background of and creative process behind some of his works.

The collection also features extensive personal and professional correspondence, including a large number of letters from Dickey's wife, Mary K. O'Brien, written between 1976 and her death in 1998. Dickey's correspondence also includes letters from prominent literary figures, including Norman Mailer, James Dickey, Richard Wilbur, and W.D. Snodgrass. Correspondence between Dickey and his childhood friends and family members (including his sister Norma Thomas and his uncle Ted Dickey) shed light on his upbringing in rural Missouri. Dickey was a prolific writer of letters to the editor, approximately 200 of which (some written under pseudonyms) are included in the collection.

Dickey was a contentious man prone to conflict, and this aspect of his personality is reflected in various documents within the collection. The correspondence files capture the sometimes difficult relationship between Dickey and his wife, Mary K. O'Brien, and sons Shannon Ezra Dickey and Rain Dancer Dickey O'Brien. Within the documents related to Dickey's personal life are records of legal proceedings. The collection details a string of legal disputes in New York and New Mexico in the 1980s and 1990s.

The collection is supplemented by files related to Dickey's childhood, academic career, honors, awards, and memorabilia. Researchers also will find more than 150 newspaper articles about Dickey, most of which were written between 1965 and 1975, when he was at the peak of his literary popularity. The collection also features personal photographs of Dickey and members of his family, along with audio recordings of Dickey reading his work, including a recording made at the Library of Congress in 1975.

Provenance Note:

The acquisition of the R.P. Dickey papers began when Dickey's longtime friend K.T. Roes contacted University of Missouri Columbia Archives Director Michael Holland in June 2006. The papers were located at the Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico home of Dickey's longtime companion, Leona Foster, who took possession of the papers following Dickey's death in 2002. Ms. Foster was ill with cancer at the time of these initial discussions.

Mr. Holland expressed his interest in acquiring the papers; however, Ms. Roes fell out of contact with Mr. Holland and no further discussions were undertaken until March 2009, when Mr. Holland received an email from Kika Vargas-Allred, executrix of Ms. Foster's estate. Ms. Foster was in declining health by this time, and Ms. Vargas-Allred handled the negotiations on her behalf. A deeded gift to the collection was executed by Leona Foster on June 18, 2009. The donation agreement included some publication and copyright conditions. The Dickey papers arrived at the University of Missouri Columbia Archives in June 2009.

Biographical Note:

Robert Preston (R.P.) Dickey was born in Elvins, Missouri on September 24, 1932, the son of Delno Mirren Dickey and Naomi Valentine Jackson Dickey. He joined the United States Air Force following his graduation from Elvins High School in 1950. Dickey claimed it was in the Air Force where he became interested in writing. As he told the story, he happened upon a small locker that was filled with verse written by a fellow private, a discovery that intrigued him and apparently sparked a latent interest in poetry.

According to the Columbia Daily Tribune, Dickey was convicted of robbing a bank in the early 1950s and served nearly ten years of a 20-year sentence at the United States Penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas. Upon parole, he moved to Columbia, Missouri where he enrolled as an undergraduate student at the University of Missouri in 1964. In June 1965, he was named winner of the George A. Mahan Poetry Contest Prize for 1964-1965 and was awarded second place in the Mahan Short Story Contest. The following year, he became the first two-time winner of the Mahan Poetry Contest.

Dickey completed his Bachelor's degree in 1968 and his M.A. in English in 1969. He served as instructor in the university's English Department from 1967-1969, then as Assistant Professor of English and Creative Writing at Southern Colorado State College from 1969-1973. He later taught at Pima College in Tucson, Arizona from 1975-1978. He was awarded a PhD from Walden University in 1975, where his PhD dissertation was Clarkey's Itinerary, an unpublished, semi-autobiographical novel.

The late 1960s and early 1970s were the most prolific years of Dickey's literary career. He published two critically acclaimed books of poetry during that period - Running Lucky (Swallow Press, Chicago, 1969) and Acting Immortal (University of Missouri Press, Columbia, 1970). Dickey's Concise Dictionary of Lead River, MO., was adapted into a musical and produced professionally. In 1972, he authored a college textbook, The Basic Stuff of Poetry. In addition, Dickey's work appeared in more than 150 periodicals, including Saturday Review and The Nation. He conducted more than 200 public readings (including a 1975 recording of his poetry for the Archive of American Literature at the Library of Congress), and in 1966 became founder and editor of the quarterly journal The Poetry Bag, which published the works of such esteemed writers as Norman Mailer, Conrad Aiken, John Neihardt, Alan Dugan, and Robert Penn Warren. Despite his professional success, Dickey struggled financially and declared bankruptcy in 1975.

Dickey was an imposing man with an intimidating demeanor. He became a committed weightlifter in prison and emerged with a thick, muscular build. Seldom did he shrink from confrontation. Harold Fulweiler, former chairman of the University of Missouri's Department of English, observed, "He was a physical bully. He had a terrible temper, beat up on a fellow student, and even threatened to kill Tom McAfee, one of his teachers." Dickey took pride in his unsparing, sometimes harsh criticism of his students' work. One of his favorite quotes came from William Blake: "Opposition is true friendship."

According to documents in the collection, Dickey was married four times. The date of his first marriage, to Jewell Crouch is unknown, although his Air Force records indicate he was married sometime prior to August 1950. Following his release from prison, Dickey married Carolyn Antoinette Vigneri in 1967 (divorced in 1969, marriage annulled in 1973), Victoria Anne McCabe in 1973 (divorced in 1976), and Mary Kathryn O'Brien in 1987. Although there is nothing in the collection that indicates Dickey and O'Brien divorced, they lived apart for many years. He spent the last decade of his life residing with longtime companion Leona Foster. Dickey fathered three children, Georgia Rae (Dickey) Hook (b. unknown), Shannon Ezra Dickey (b. 1969) and Rain Dancer Dickey O'Brien (b. 1978). He became estranged from all three children.

In the early 1980s, Dickey relocated to New York City where, in 1984, he was injured when the ceiling of his dilapidated brownstone collapsed on him. He used the earnings from an insurance settlement to purchase a home in Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico where he spent approximately the last 15 years of his life.

Although Dickey continued to write poetry, his focus in the mid-1970s shifted toward other forms of writing. He wrote the libretto for the opera, Minnequa, performed in 1976 by the Pueblo Symphony Orchestra in celebration of Colorado's centennial. He scripted at least 16 complete plays from the mid 1970s through the 1990s, most if not all of which went unperformed. He labored for more than a decade to publish Exercise Anytime, co-authored with O'Brien, a book that promised to help a reader "get all the exercise he needs without taking time out to do it." Exercise Anytime finally emerged as a self-published book in 1998.

The final years of Dickey's life were marked by a litany of legal disputes, including long-running battles with the local authorities over traffic tickets, an unsuccessful criminal libel charge against Taos County district magistrate Betty Gonzalez, and a lawsuit against the City of New York claiming police brutality. During the 1990s, he wrote dozens of letters to the editor of his local newspaper, the Taos News, in which he frequently espoused his libertarian political philosophies.

In 1999, Dickey published Collected Poems, a selection of 1,050 of the more than 6,000 poems he claimed to have written in his life. His final known published work is Taos and Other Works of Art, a book of his poems illustrated by Foster and published shortly before his death. Dickey died in Taos, New Mexico on May 15, 2002.
