Records Title: UMC; Student Life and Activities; Memorabilia; Ralph Gravely Scrapbook
Dates: ca. 1919
Volume: 1 FF

Scope and Content Note

(A00-187)
This Record Sub-Group was compiled from a scrapbook created by University of Missouri-Columbia Alumni Ralph Gravely, 1919 Journalism, and owned by Ben L. Gravely. This collection contains 13 black and white photographs (17.5 x 12.5 cm) of exterior scenes and images of the University of Missouri-Columbia campus, cadet training on the MU campus, and of Camp McFarland. Camp McFarland was a cadet training camp for MU students established to fulfill a military training requirement of the 1862 Morrill Act. While the tent camp was physically located on the rolling hills outside Rocheport, the cadets often trained on the MU Campus. The level, open space of Francis Quadrangle provided ample room for training exercises, drills, and formal assembly of the cadets and their band. This collection represents only the portion of the scrapbook that relates to the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Note to Researcher: The Ralph Gravely scrapbook was loaned to the State Historical Society of Missouri by Ben L Gravely with full permission to make access available to researchers. The State Historical Society then offered the University of Missouri Archives copies of the photographs relating to the MU Campus and Camp McFarland, the MU Cadet Camp that was located in Rocheport, Missouri. The following descriptions are taken, in part, from the accession records of the State Historical Society.

Historical Note:

Ralph Gravely was a grandson of Col. Joseph Jackson Gravely, Lieutenant Governor of Missouri from November 1870 until his death in 1872.

Series Descriptions:

This Record Sub-Group is not divided into separate record series. The numbering reflects the original placement of the images in the scrapbook.
