Scope and Content

(A93-69; A00-165; Special Collections Vertical File; SPEC-MU)
This Sub-Group of minority student publications contains many periodicals written or sponsored by the Legion of Black Collegians (LBC), the Black Alumni Organization, the Black Culture Center, and the Kuumba Literary Society. Included are copies of Black Alumni Newsletter (also called simply The Letter), The Black Book, The Black Letter, Black Studies Newsletter, Blackout, LBC Newsletter, Prime Time, Survival, UMOJO (later known as UMOJA), The Voice, and The African-Americanist. The publications include news articles, cartoons, poetry, calendars of events, as well as other items of specific interest to minority students. Many articles describe the struggles a black minority has endured since gaining admission to the University in 1950. Other articles celebrate achievements made by blacks on campus or announce events celebrating black heritage. In File Folder 11 and in the Oversize Folder are related news clippings from other publications along with posters for LBC and the Black Cultural Center events. Also included in this Sub-Group is a microfilmed collection of the combined minority student publications holdings of the University Archives, Ellis Library Special Collections, and the UM Library Depository.

Note to Researcher: This Sub-Group does not contain a complete publication run of most of the magazines and newsletters listed above. Please note that many issues of the Black Studies Newsletter are photocopies and are not original. See also C:1/25/8 for additional issues of some of these publications.
