Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group holds records of non-fraternity and non-sorority officially sanctioned student organizations at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Included within the Sub-Group are event programs, posters, scrapbooks, photographs, organizational directories, constitutions, correspondence, meeting minutes and agendas, fiscal records, guide books, training manuals, handbooks, minute books, and course evaluation books.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:22/13/1 (A82-35)
This Series holds records relating to the Independent Women's Organization (ca. 1949-1951), the Women's Self-Governing Association, and the Association of Women Students (ca. 1944-1974). Materials include membership directories (ca. 1968-1989), programs from events sponsored by the organizations.

Series 2. - C:22/13/2 (A88-109; A89-3)
This Series holds scrapbooks compiled by members of the Women's Self-Governing Association and the Association of Women Students (ca. 1925-1980). The scrapbook for the Women's Self-Governing Association contains newspaper clippings, programs, and information regarding Homecoming, the dedication of Memorial Tower, a photograph of Edna St. Vincent Millay and other materials pertaining to her visit to campus. The Series also contains handbooks and regulations as well as President's Council documents and Memos for Missouri Maids and ink drawings of Jesse Wrench. The scrapbook for the Association of Women Students also contains newspaper clippings, photos, programs, and documentation of the Year of the Tigress Convocation. The Series contains handbooks including the Women's Health Services Handbook and a newsletter entitled Female Focus. In addition the Series contains photos of the demonstration to "Dump Dempster," a Board of Curators member and Association of Women Students Council minutes.

Series 3. - C:22/13/4 (A99-93)
This Series contains a minute book of the University of Missouri-Columbia Student Government Association for the years 1914-1920. The volume documents the organization's activities during those years, including student events and efforts to establish a University women's building. It also contains rosters of council members that served during that time period.

This Series has been enlarged to a full inventory.
Please follow this link to reach the inventory. It contains records of recognized student organizations at the University of Missouri-Columbia campus (1945-1996, 2013-; bulk 1970-1980's). These records were created by the Office of Student Life and include both defunct and active organizations. The depth of documentation within the files varies widely; some contain only standard University forms while others include newspaper clippings, bylaws and constitutions, minutes, and lists of members. Standard university forms include the Annual Report of Student Organizations (which includes the officers, sponsor, and statement of purpose), financial reporting forms, and fundraising forms.

Series 5. - C:22/13/7 (A04-49; A06-17; A06-48; A07-105)
This Series contains records of the Graduate Student Association (GSA) at the University of Missouri-Columbia, (1982, 2000-2007). The records consist of a copy of the association's constitution, administrative correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes and agendas, Superior Graduate Achievement Award files [RESTRICTED], and handbooks, including a GSA Reference Guide, (1982). The majority of the correspondence was created and received by Presidents of GSA. The meeting records include minutes, agendas, and supplementary materials for the Graduate Student Association and some for Graduate Faculty Senate, on the committees of which body a GSA representative sits.

Series 6. - C:22/13/8 (A05-16)
This Series contains administrative and fiscal records of the Arts and Science Student Government organization, (1968-1989). The records consist of correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, organization constitutions, brochures, pamphlets, broadsheets, and election records. The records in this Series pertain to the following: administration of the organization, including elections and membership petitions; event sponsorship and publicity; award sponsorship; College of Arts and Science administrative committees; funding for Museum of Art and Archaeology purchases; budget; and publications. A few of the fiscal records date from the period the organization was known as the Arts and Science Divisional Student Council, (1968-1969).

These records were received from the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Science, which has served as caretaker for these student organization records, due in part to the strong tie between the Arts and Science Student Government organization and the administration of the College.

This Series contains records of the Student Government Association (SGA), (1938-1959). The records consist of meeting minutes, (1957-1959), constitutions (1938, 1945-1950), newsletters (1951-1952), reports and sample ballots.

This Series contains records of the Missouri Students Association (MSA), (1959-1967). The records consist of meeting minutes, (1959-1964), and constitutions and by-laws, (1960, 1967).

This Series contains fiscal records for the University of Missouri Yearbook, the Savitar, (1929-1932). The records consist of payment and receipt vouchers, bank account books and statements, subscription slips, and correspondence. The records roughly cover the production of the Savitar for the years 1930, 1931, and 1932.

This Series contains records of the Associated Students of the University of Missouri (ASUM), (1975-2006). The records consist of Board of Director meeting agendas and minutes, correspondence, memoranda, intern legislative training manuals, by-laws and constitution, advertisements, newpaper clippings, brochures, flyers, surveys, reports, and press releases.

Series 12. - C:22/13/13 (A07-126; A08-40; A18-29)
This Series contains administrative and meeting records created and received by the Missouri Students Association, (1968-1969, 1976-1977, 1984, 1994-2007). The records consist of correspondence, notes, referendum forms, and supplementary informational material regarding the proposal for the renovation and addition to the Student Recreation Center, (2001), Board of Curators' meeting agendas and reports, (2001-2003), and a University of Missouri-Rolla Campus Master Plan, (2001). Also included in the Series are Senate meeting agendas and minutes, (1968-1969), committee attendance sheets and meeting minutes, (2005-2007), Senate handbooks, (1995-2007), Senate legislative logs, bills, reports, resolutions, and correspondence, (1994-2007), and material pertaining to placing a student representative on the University of Missouri's Board of Curators, (1976-1977, 1984).

This Series contains records of the Associated Students of the University of Missouri (ASUM), (1973-1977, 2001, 2019). The records consist of a variety of reports, papers, proposals, budget material, correspondence, memoranda, and printed and duplicated material pertaining to the establishment and functions of ASUM.

Note to Researcher: The records in Series 17 were collected by ASUM's first Executive Director, Douglas Viehland, a graduate student at that time in the College of Education at the University. Viehland had previously received a Bachelor of Arts degree in the College of Arts and Science. The records demonstrate the instrumental role Viehland played in the formation of ASUM.
