Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains records of the Friends of the Library group, (1955-2002). Friends of the Library is an organization composed of alumni and other interested individuals dedicated "to encourage the giving of time, books, and money to nurture the growth of the University Library and State Historical Society of Missouri Collections (1963 Annual meeting program.)"

Historical Note:

In 1982, the title of the organization was changed to The Friends of the University of Missouri-Columbia Libraries and the State Historical Society of Missouri Library.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:20/3/1 (A79-51; A01-13; A01-67; A02-58; A07-05; A07-125; A14-62; miscellaneous)
This Series contains records of the Friends of the Library, an organization composed of alumni and other interested individuals dedicated to encouraging the giving of time, books, and money to nurture the growth of the University Library and the library of the State Historical Society, (1955-2002). Included in this Series are correspondence files, membership lists, records of the Distinguished Friends Committee, news clippings, press releases, lists of materials donated to the MU Libraries, lists of donors, photographs, negatives, and contact sheets, programs and records from the annual meetings, (1960-1991 except 1962), promotional records, and audio recordings of some of the annual meetings, (1967, 1974-1976). There are also copies of the Stuckey Essay Contest essays, (1984-2002). The Series also contains copies of a Library of the University of Missouri bookplate (n.d.), a bookmark commemorating the 2001 Colonnade renovation (funded by the "Making a Grand Entrance" campaign), and a University of Missouri-Columbia Official Development Design lapel pin distributed in recognition of the For All We Call Mizzou fund-raising campaign, (2001).

Series 2. - C:20/00/11
This Series contains materials related to the Friends of the Library organization. Items include newsletters, constitution of the organization, annual meeting programs, and other printed and duplicated materials. Titles include: Annual Meeting Programs (1960-1971, 1973-1974, 1976-1983, 1984-1994, 1999), and the newsletters Book Notes (1993, 1999-2002), and Notes (1968, 1976-1989). Also included is a membership card for 1976.

Series 3. - C:20/3/2
This Series contains photographic materials pertaining to the Friends of the Library, (1968). The material consists of photographic negatives and a photographic print depicting the 1968 Awards Ceremony of the Friends of the Library. Included in the photographic material are depictions of Ralph Parker, John Schwada, John Weaver, Richard Charnier, and Roger W. Straus, Jr.

Restrictions Note: The Archives of the University of Missouri-Columbia is required by law and Board of Curator's policy to restrict access to some files and information. Student records are held as confidential under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and by University policy. Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
