Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains administrative records created by the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine's Department of Surgery. Included in the Sub-Group are annual reports, faculty files, faculty papers, surgical films, photographic slides, a ledger, correspondence, case files, and meeting minutes.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:14/36/1 (A94-65)
This Series holds copies of the Annual Reports of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine's Department of Surgery (1953-1975). Included in the Series is an incomplete run of MU Department of Surgery annual reports, as well as surgical films, photographic slide presentations, patient correspondence files, and a surgery ledger (1927-1928).

Series 2. - C:14/36/4 (A00-100; A04-52)
This Series contains administrative records created by the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine's Department of Surgery, (1983-1997; bulk 1992-1997). The records consist of quality assurance reports, correspondence, case files, budget materials, and committee meeting minutes with supporting documentation. Quality Assurance reports include: infectious control monitoring; unplanned admissions; returns to operating room; quality assurance monitoring and evaluations for various surgical procedures; and surgical wound infection rates, (renamed Risk Management Monthly Reports). Correspondence in this Series includes letters and memoranda of Chief of Staff Hugh Stephenson, of Dr. William Davis from (Otolaryngology) and of Dr.Gregory Renner (Otolaryngology), letters to Doctors concerning problems, and memoranda concerning the use of specific medicines. Case files from procedure review cases are also included as well as Departmental budget working files and materials (1983-1985). This Series also contains records of the library and rare book room remodeling (1987), Audiology grants and research, program evaluation, and Executive Committee meetings, (1992-1997), which include monthly meeting folders, documentation in the form of charts and other supporting materials, and minutes.

This Series contains administrative records from the Department of Surgery in the University of Missouri-Columbia's School of Medicine, (ca. 1970-1999). The records consist of faculty files [RESTRICTED] arranged by departmental division and generally relate to promotion, tenure, position appointments, and teaching. The majority of the records were created or received during the chairmanship of Donald Silver.

Specific records and topics found in the Series include: teaching responsibilities, hospital privileges, professional societies, emeritus status, published articles, faculty curricula vitae, and awards. The majority of the records were created or received during the chairmanships of Donald Silver and James Jones.

This Series contains administrative records of the Cardiothoracic Division of the Department of Surgery in the University of Missouri-Columbia's School of Medicine, (1963-2001). The records consist of meeting minutes, agendas, correspondence, memoranda, and supplementary materials of the Division's Business Meetings, (1993-2000), of residency program reviews [RESTRICTED], and of the correspondence of the Division Chief, Jack Curtis, (1986-1997) [RESTRICTED]. The Series also includes annual reports from the Department of Surgery and from the Cardiothoracic unit, (1963-2001, with gaps).

This Series contains professional papers and administrative records created and received by Hugh E. Stephenson, Jr., (1950-1974). The papers and records pertain to the periods in Stephenson's career when he was Surgeon-in-chief at University Hospital, Professor of Surgery, and Chairman of the Department of Surgery. The papers and records consist of correspondence and memoranda, reports, campus and non-campus committee files, proceedings, lecture notes, presentations, publications, association files, and conference and symposia files. Specific topics found in the Series include: the Committee on Animal Care, (1956-1961, 1964); the Columbia Committee on Trauma; the Long Range Planning Committee on Bioengineering, (1968-1969); the University of Missouri YMCA Board, (1957-1965); the American Association of University Professors, (1955-1973); Department of Surgery annual reports; Applied Anatomy lecture notes, (1950-1970) [RESTRICTED]; and an Athletic Injury course, (1953-1972).

Series 17. - C:14/36/17 (A22-50)
This Series contains photographs created or received by the Department of Surgery in the School of Medicine at the University of Missouri. The two 11x14-inch black-and-white photographic prints depict a mid-1960s University of Missouri Emergency Medical Services Dodge van. One of the photographs shows two members of the EMS crew standing outside of the van amidst all its emergency equipment.
