Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism records pertaining to the development and operation of MU's KOMU television station. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence files, news releases, newspaper ads and promotional articles, program idea files, broadcast scripts, budget materials, video taped programs, printed and duplicated material, and reports evaluating KOMU. Topics addressed in this Sub-Group include accreditation, Federal Communication Commission regulations, freedom of the press, radio and television courses at MU, educational television, and the broadcast industry. Also included in the Sub-Group are some materials related to KOMU but predating the station's creation, such as personal papers of faculty members in the UMC Journalism School's Broadcasting Department.

Series 3. - C:11/6/4
This Series holds film clips of programs broadcast on the UMC School of Journalism's television station, KOMU (1970-1972). The subjects of these films vary from portions of an Orange Bowl football game broadcast to a report on Brown Recluse spider research. Notable guests who appear in these films include University Presidents C. Brice Ratchford and John C. Weaver, child-raising specialist Dr. Benjamin Spock, MU head football coach Dan Devine, and Missouri Governors John H. Dalton and Warren E. Hearnes.

This Series holds 1/4-inch audio tapes of the University of Missouri School of Journalism's Missouri Forum television program (1961, 1964, 1970-1992). The programs in this Series vary widely in content but often feature political figures and deal with legislative and governmental topics. Also addressed by some of the programs in the Series are subjects such as prison reform, environmentalism, homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, sexism, domestic violence and censorship, as well as day-to-day events and activities on the Columbia campus. Missouri Forum was moderated until 1980 by Edward C. Lambert. From 1980 until the end of its run in 1992, Missouri Forum was moderated by Rod Gelatt. This Series also includes a video tape (2") of John H. Dalton's gubernatorial inauguration, (1961).

Series 5. - C:11/6/8 (A01-135)
This Series holds one VHS videotape produced by News Center 8 at KOMU, UMC School of Journalism's television station (1987). The 49 minute video is entitled, "New Art, New Experiments with Art, Research and Technology, A Portfolio of Artists." The video highlights the creative use of computers and was produced by Birgit Wassmuth, Associate Professor of Advertising. Other speakers include Dick Helmick, Tom McKenney, Lee Snyder, Ed Small, Larry Rugolo and Julie Mueller-Brown.

Series 6. - C:11/6/9 (A06-59)
This Series contains records created and received by KOMU-TV at the University of Missouri-Columbia, (1978-1999). The records consist of sports footage produced, aired, or taped by KOMU-TV. Included in the Series are basketball and football highlight tapes, season preview tapes, and a few game tapes.

This Series contains printed and duplicated material created by or related to the School of Journalism television station, KOMU-TV, (1976-1981). Included in this Series are a run of "Dianne Larkin - Recipes from 'It's a Woman's World'" newsletters, (1976-1981, with gaps).

This Series holds u-matic video tapes of the University of Missouri School of Journalism's Missouri Forum television program (1973, 1984-1992, with gaps). The programs in this Series vary widely in content but often feature political figures and deal with legislative and governmental topics as well as day-to-day events and activities on the Columbia campus. Missouri Forum was moderated until 1980 by Edward C. Lambert. From 1980 until the end of its run in 1992, Missouri Forum was moderated by Rod Gelatt.

Note to Researcher: The dates provided for the individual shows are either the recording date or the air date for the program.
With a few exceptions due to tape condition, the Missouri Forum programs in this Series are available in digital form.
Corresponding audio tapes for some of the Missouri Forum programs in this Series can be found in C:11/6/5, Series 4, above. The audio broadcast and the television broadcast seem to have been identical.
