Scope and Content Note
This Sub-Group contains University of Missouri-Columbia Graduate School and Office of Research Dean's Office records. Included in this Sub-Group are office correspondence files, committee, council, and board files, graduating student records, graduation lists, curriculum files, program evaluations, grant and research funding records, policy change proposals, promotion and tenure records, budget and financial records, annual reports, fellowship program records, and photographs of UMC Graduate School Dean's and administrators.
Note to Researcher: For an autobiographical article by Professor Walter Miller (Dean of MU's Graduate School from 1914 to 1930) ask University Archives staff about collection UW:4/0/7.
Series Descriptions:
Series 1. - C:10/1/1
This Series contains administrative records of the UMC Graduate School and Office of Research Dean's Office (1955-1971). Included in this Series are correspondence files, reports, and budget and financial records. Topics in this Series include cooperation with local, regional, and national professional organizations, degree program policies and supervision, long-range planning and reorganization, committee functions and membership, financing of higher education, research center grants, graduate stipends, staffing needs, the University Graduate Council, and the Research Policy Committee.

Series 2. - C:10/1/2, C:10/1/NP (A74-12; A86-79; A95-11)
This Series holds Graduate School and Office of Research Dean's Office records pertaining to committees and councils (1931-1984). Included in this Series are meeting minutes for the Graduate Council (1952-1969), Committee of Deans (1919-1954), Committee on Educational Policy of the Graduate School (1946-1968) as well as meeting materials from other campus committees. In addition to meeting minutes and materials this Series includes correspondence, committee reports, annual reports, student petitions, lists of courses approved for graduate credit, graduate faculty membership regulations, and graduate degree requirements.

Series 3. - C:10/1/4 (09/1971)
This Series holds Graduate School and Office of Research Dean's Office records pertaining to students who have earned Master's degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia (ca. 1900-1963). Included in this Series are student transcripts, applications for degrees, ID cards and photographs, Selective Service forms, deficiency notices, absence and medical reports, death notices, Graduate Record Exam scores, financial assistance records, requests for exemptions, results of oral examinations, disciplinary actions, fee payment verifications, recommendations for honorary societies, and certificates of attendance. Also included in the Series are related correspondence files, newspaper clippings, and journal articles by or about UMC graduate students.

Series 4. - C:10/1/5 and C:10/1/6 (A74-12; A82-93)
This Series holds faculty and general correspondence files created or received by the Dean's Office of the Graduate School and Office of Research (1931-1981). This Series contains general correspondence between Dean Henry Bent and MU faculty and staff members from 1931 through 1954. The Series also contains general administrative correspondence of the Dean's Office regarding both general and specific concerns of faculty, staff, and students, as well as faculty recruitment and departure, relations with the University's Central Administration, graduate program content, policy revisions, appointment of graduate advisors, use of graduate students as teaching assistants, relations with other UM campuses, University activities in wartime, financial and budgetary matters, course grading, professional conferences and meetings, faculty publications, and student, faculty, and staff disputes. Also included in the Series are departmental evaluations, long-range planning inventories, graduate student questionnaires, research evaluations, research and foreign travel proposals, degree proposals, and award nominations.

This Series holds Graduate School and Office of Research annual reports, annual report summaries, and annual report supporting documents (1940-1974). Included in the Series are summaries of Graduate School and Office of Research annual reports for the years 1940, 1941, and 1944-1946, as well as complete annual reports for the years 1963-1964, 1966-1974, and annual report supporting documentation for the years 1971-1972. The Series also contains three reels of 16mm microfilm of Graduate School annual reports, (1931-1969/1970).

This Series holds Graduate School and Office of Research Dean's Office general administrative files (ca. 1984-1988, 1993-1994). Included in the Series are correspondence files and records pertaining to the Graduate School Research Center, MU's Weldon Spring property, the Academic Enhancement Program, the Graduate Student Affairs Program, and background records on Minority Recruitment and Retention.

This Series contains general correspondence created or received by the MU Graduate School and Research Office (1983). This Series includes working papers and reports of the Committee on Laboratory Facilities regarding laboratory animal facilities as well as applications and correspondence regarding Research Office support for foreign travel by MU faculty.

This Series contains administrative files created or received by the MU Graduate School and Office of Research during the tenures of Acting Dean Richard Wallace, Dean Don Blount, and Associate Dean Andrew Minor (1959-1987, bulk 1966-1987). The Series includes administrative correspondence, meeting minutes, committee reports, self-studies, program reviews, and new degree proposals. The topics covered by the records in this Series include affirmative action, graduate student stipends, questionnaires and surveys completed by The Graduate School, curriculum, inventories of academic degree programs, committees, councils and boards, policy change proposals, evaluations of research programs, scholarships, fellowships, grants for foreign travel, the Chancellor's Award, Weldon Springs Awards, Role and Scope, graduate and doctoral faculty, promotion and tenure, development, budget, grant and research development, self-studies and program reviews. Also part of the Series are files from Dean Blount, including Board of Director meeting minutes, various reports, and executive summaries, regarding Missouri Ingenuity, Inc., (1984-1987), of which Blount was a Board member.

Series 11. - C:10/1/3 (A03-26)
This Series contains administrative records from the Graduate School, (1985-1997), concerning the Access Enhancement Program of the University of Missouri, a program intended to support student minority enhancement, especially for underrepresention in specific disciplines, and the Patricia Roberts Harris (PRH) Fellowship, a United States Department of Education program that was closed out in the late 1990s. Records found in this Series include funding and grant proposals, faculty vitae, program handbooks, performance reports, correspondence, agreement memoranda, and award notifications. Also included in the Series are records of the Southeastern PRH directors' meeting, (1993).

Series 12. - C:10/1/10 (A04-26)
This Series contains administrative records from the Graduate School, (1997-1998), consisting of correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes and agendas, and statistical data [RESTRICTED] regarding the graduate student fee waiver system and the Graduate Student Support Policy (GSSP) administered by the Graduate School. The majority of the records stem from the period during which Charles Sampson was Interim Dean of the Graduate School.

This Series contains administrative and other records created and received by the Dean and Associate Deans of the Graduate School of the University of Missouri-Columbia, (1975-1996, bulk 1990-1996). The records consist of correspondence and memoranda pertaining to the following: individual departments and schools, university administration, Coordinating Board for Higher Education, curricula, campus and national associations, and research. The Series also contains agendas and minutes from Directors of Graduate Studies meetings, Graduate School fellowship committees [RESTRICTED], Faculty Council, and the Affirmative Action Advisory Committee. Other records and topics in this Series include Graduate Record Examiniation statistics, graduate awards ceremonies, course approvals and topics courses, Affirmative Action handbooks, annual reports, enrollment management reports, and Professional and Graduate Degree Assistance.

This Series contains records created by the Graduate School of the University of Missouri, (1892-2004). The records consist of the official master's and doctoral degree recipient lists submitted by the Graduate School to the Office of the Registrar prior to each graduation period. Some of the listings include theses or dissertation titles and previously earned degrees. Some commencement programs are included in the records. The Series also contains summary lists of advanced degree graduates, (1895-1940), and lists of degrees by field or area, including some from the School of Mines and Metallurgy in Rolla.

This Series contains records created by the communications or publications unit in the Graduate School of the University of Missouri, (1993-2010). The records and topics include the following: Louis Stokes Missouri Alliance for Minority Participation, Missouri Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate, Access to Knowledge, Graduate School Commencement, Preparing Future Faculty, Graduate Faculty Senate Executive Committee meeting minutes, recruitment, Linda Godwin, Maria Dixon, printed and duplicated material, photographic prints and negatives, websites, and some administrative correspondence and memoranda. Some of the records in this Series originated during the time Sarah Mueller, Leanna Morris, and Steven Richardson were employed as communications coordinators for the Graduate School.

Restrictions Note: The Archives of the University of Missouri-Columbia is required by law and Board of Curator's policy to restrict access to some files and information. Student records are held as confidential under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and by University policy. Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
