Scope and Content Note
This Sub-Group contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Arts and Science's Department of Romance Languages. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence files, faculty publications, personnel files, newspaper clippings, photographs of faculty, students, and campus scenes, as well as post cards, musical programs, biographical sketches, and departmental histories.
Series Descriptions:
Series 1. - C:6/35/1 (A76-29)
This Series contains correspondence files of the UMC Department of Romance Languages which are arranged alphabetically and then chronologically (ca. 1953-1967). Topics in this Series include the Modern Languages Association, the Joseph Fels Foundation, grant applications, employment vacancies, departmental assistantships, honor programs, curriculum planning, annual reports, and admission requirements. Most of the Joseph Fels Foundation materials are found in Box 1 and filed under Morris Green, President of the Foundation. Correspondents in this Series include book publishers, the Comptroller's Office, Missouri State Representatives and Senators, and University of Missouri Presidents and Chancellors.

This Series holds a copy of A History of the Romance Languages at Mizzou, 1834-1992, by Professor Emeritus Bonner Mitchell (ca. 1992).

Series 3. - C:6/35/7 (A83-118; A83-128; A84-35; A84-94)
This Series contains memorabilia collected by MU Department of Romance Languages Professor Bredelle Jesse (ca. 1890-1970). Included in this Series is a biography of William F. Switzler (Jesse's MA Thesis), as well as souvenirs of the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, news clippings, mortar board (1916), programs of the MU Laboratory School, postcards bearing scenes of the MU campus, and copies of Some Saints and Some Sinners in the Holy Land and From Missouri to the Isle of Mull, both by MU President Walter Williams. Also included in the Series are photographs (ca. 1890-1916) of Professor Luther M. Defoe, Professor William F. Switzler, a group shot of Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt and Governor Polk, the MU Elementary School, MU President Richard H. Jesse receiving his L.L.D. degree, campus scenes (such as Francis Quadrangle, Jesse Hall and the MU President's House), and St Patrick's Day celebrations at MU (ca. 1904-1916). Also included is a photo of the "Home of the University Elementary School... from September, 1905, to September, 1912", taken by Professor A.M. Hyde.

Note to Researcher: A copy of the first issue of the Columbia Missourian, 14 September 1908, and a 1911-1912 staff and faculty university directory have been removed from Box 1 and placed in an oversize folder relocated to the map cabinet.
Series 4. - C:6/35/9 (A02-175)
This Series contains memorabilia relating to W. Albert Brent, Professor of Spanish in the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Missouri-Columbia, (1984). The Series consists of a citation from the Board of Curators conferring the title of Professor Emeritus of Spanish on Brent and a bound volume of congratulatory letters written by colleagues, administrators and former students on the occasion of his retirement.

This Series contains records created by the Department of Romance Languages in the College of Arts and Science, (1955-2000). The records consist of personnel files of inactive or terminated faculty or academic staff.

Series 6. - C:6/35/11 (A07-99)
This Series contains color photographic slides of the University of Missouri's Columbia campus and surroundings, (ca. 1976). The 14 slides were taken along Lowry Street, University Avenue, Hitt Street, and Paquin Street, and they include images of the Missouri Bookstore, the Fine Arts Building, Memorial Tower, Fine Arts Annex, Manor House, Paquin Tower, the Personnel Services Building, and University Place.

Series 7. - C:6/35/12 (A19-42)
This Series contains administrative records of the Department of Romance Languages in the College of Arts and Science, (ca. 1984). The records consist of department program review reports, including a Dean's assessment, the Program Review Committee evaluation, the Departmental Program Review survey, and department profiles and plans.

Restrictions Note: The Archives of the University of Missouri-Columbia is required by law and Board of Curator's policy to restrict access to some files and information. Student records are held as confidential under the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 and by University policy. Faculty promotion and tenure records and Academic Personnel files are restricted for 75 years, or the lifetime of the individual. All grievance, disciplinary, and medical records are treated as confidential files. Consultations with legal counsel, both in-house and external, are protected by the attorney/client privilege and will not be released.
