Scope and Content Note

This Sub-Group contains records of the University of Missouri-Columbia College of Arts and Science's Department of Music. Included in this Sub-Group are correspondence files, memoranda, committee materials, scholarship information, academic personnel records, photographs, and printed and duplicated material. The Sub-Group also contains 12-inch phonograph recordings, 1/4" audio reel-to-reel tapes, audio cassette tapes, video tapes (VHS), film (16mm), and non-audio-visual records pertaining to concerts and other performances. Some of the records in this Sub-Group originated in the time before the creation of the School of Fine Arts in 1986 and after the formation of the School of Music in 2000.

Series Descriptions:

Series 1. - C:6/30/3 (A94-21; A95-61; A96-7; A97-6)
This Series contains administrative records of the UMC Department of Music, (ca. 1962-1991). Included in this Series are correspondence files, memoranda from the Department Chair, faculty meeting minutes, Curriculum Committee materials, Chancellor's Music Festival files, scholarship information, academic personnel records, and records pertaining to concerts, performances, and special presentations.

Series 2. - C:6/30/1
This Series contains a photograph of the University of Missouri's chapter of the Music Fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha, (ca. 1911). The image was used in the 1911 Savitar and depicts, among other members, A. Ross Hill.

Series 3. - C:6/30/4 (A01-157)
This Series contains 1 VHS videocassette from the UMC Department of Music. This 75-minute video contains Jane Allen's Memorial Concert, (03/03/1999).

Note to Archivist: MU's Ellis Library donated this video, since the Library had two copies. MU's Ellis Library acquired both videos from the Department of Music in 2001.
Note to Researcher: The VHS videocassette in Series 3 has been converted to Digital Video and DVD formats.

Series 4. - C:6/30/5 (A02-156; A02-169; A07-87)
This Series contains three 12-inch phonograph recordings of the University of Missouri's Marching Mizzou under the direction of Dr. Alexander L. Pickard. One LP is entitled And Away We Go! and is the second album released by Marching Mizzou, ca. 1971. The second is entitled Heritage '76: a Missouri tribute to the Bicentennial on which the band performs 22 numbers, including Old Missouri, Fight Tiger and Show Me. Marching Mizzou's part in the bicentennial-year celebration is noted on the back cover of the LP: "Because of its proud history, spirit, excellence on the field, and great ability to entertain, Marching Mizzou has been named an Official Bicentennial Band of the State of Missouri." The third LP is entitled The Music of Ol' Mizzou, (no date given).

This Series contains terminated faculty records from the Department and School of Music, (1957-2014). The files [RESTRICTED] contain evaluations, correspondence, personnel forms, promotion and tenure records, grievance material, and search records.

Series 6. - C:6/30/7 (A08-76)
This Series contains administrative and committee records created by the Department (and later School) of Music at the University of Missouri, (ca. 1970-2008). The records stem from the period Donald E. McGlothlin and then Melvin C. Platt were department chairmen. In addition, a number of the records pertain to the administration of the School of Fine Arts under McGlothlin and, subsequently, Platt. The records consist of the following types and topics: administrative, public relations, and fund-raising correspondence; memoranda; faculty and other committee meeting minutes and agendas; reports; data summaries; course outlines or syllabi; informational bulletins; contracts; scholarships [RESTRICTED]; and evaluations [RESTRICTED].

Series 7. - C:6/30/8 (A11-77)
This Series contains audio and video tapes of various University of Missouri bands, (1974, 1982-1996). The tapes include 1/4-inch reel-to-reel audio, audio cassettes, and VHS video. The material covers the period during which Dale E. Kennedy, (1982-1987), and Dale J. Lonis, (1987-2001), were Director of Bands. The recordings range from rehearsal to performances, both on and off the Columbia campus. Some of the audio and video is of Marching Mizzou. One of the audio cassette tapes is of the University of Missouri University Singers, (1992), under the direction of David Rayl.

Series 10. - C:6/30/10 (A16-33; A16-34)
This Series contains audio-visual and other records pertaining to the University of Missouri's Department of Music, specifically its ensemble, Marching Mizzou, (1963-2005). The records consist of video tapes (VHS and S-VHS) of Marching Mizzou performances at football games and other events, (1982-2005). A few of the video tapes are not related to Marching Mizzou. In addition, Series 10 contains 16mm film of Marching Mizzou performances, (1963-1981), including a travelogue of the band's 1975 trip to London, England. Alongside the variety of musical numbers and marching formations, performances included the Alumni Band, the Golden Girls, the Color Guard, the Drum Corps, various twirlers, including Warren Bass, Ken Johnson, and Anne Marie Drahush, homecoming queens, MU chancellors, and the celebrity Bob Hope. A number of performance show books, (1971-1979), also form part of this Series. The show books provide diagrams for the various band formations used in a specific halftime or other performance.

Note to Researcher: The video tapes were donated by former Marching Mizzou member Craig Mueller in April of 2015. In addition, Mueller provided digital transfers of nearly all the tapes. The films and show books were donated by former Marching Mizzou member Guy Schreck in June of 2015. Schreck also provided digital transfers from the films.

This Series contains administrative records of the University of Missouri's School of Music, (2009). The records consist of drafts and working documents for the 2009-2017 strategic plan, Scholarship Task Force files, and an Undergraduate Curriculum Task Force report.

Series 12. - C:6/30/12 (A21-06)
This Series contains audio records created by the University of Missouri's Department of Music, (ca. 1963-1974). The records consist of 1/4-inch audio tape reels documenting the University of Missouri Band, the University of Missouri Concert Band, recording sessions, and a faculty ensemble. Series 12 includes a tape of the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra with Alexandar Pickard performing a trumpet solo.

Series 13. - C:6/30/13 (A22-41)
This Series contains audio recordings of University of Missouri Department of Music Professor Carleton Spotts, (1961-1995). The recordings cover Spotts' academic career as a cellist at the University of Missouri and consist mainly of recordings of Department of Music events, including faculty recitals. In addition to solo recordings, Series 13 holds many recordings made by the Esterhazy Quartet, the quartet-in-residence of the Univerity of Missouri of which Spotts was a founding member. There are also recordings of the the Missouri Arts Quintet, the Rollins Graduate String Quartet, and the University Philharmonic. The majority of recordings are on 1/4-inch audio tape reels, while a few are on cassette tape. In some instances, the recording was done by the radio station KBIA for later broadcast. Some of the tape boxes contain the relevant event program for the recording.

Note to Researcher: The recordings were donated by Carleton Spotts' son, David in August of 2022.
Carleton Brooks Spotts was appointed Instructor in Music at the University of Missouri in July of 1960. His title was changed to Assistant Professor of Music in 1962, to Associate Professor in 1965, and to Professor in 1970. Spott retired from the University of Missouri in 1994 and was designated as Professor Emeritus the same year.
