Scope and Content Note

(A98-11)
This Record Sub-Group contains University of Missouri-Columbia organizational records of Phi Upsilon Omicron, a national honorary professional fraternity in Home Economics, Rho Chapter. Included in the Sub-Group are the constitution and by-laws of the organization, officers' duties, history of the local chapter, records of the two clubs that preceded the establishment of the Rho chapter, multimedia materials, chapter scrapbooks, and annual members' handbooks. Also included in this Sub-Group are records such as organizational meeting minutes and attendance records, correspondence, reports, and fiscal records. Additionally included in the Sub-Group are membership data, program information, and minutes and related materials from the Biennial Conclave and National Council meetings.

Historical Note:

Phi Upsilon Omicron, a national honorary professional fraternity in Home Economics, had its official beginnings in 1911 at the University of Minnesota. It was not until 1929, though, that the Rho Chapter of this honorary Home Economics fraternity was established at the University of Missouri. Predecessors to the Rho chapter of Phi Upsilon Omicron were the Home Economics Club (1921-1931) and the Mary Louise Gwynn Club (1928-1929). Phi Upsilon Omicron's membership is composed of sophomore, junior and senior undergraduate students, graduate students, alumnae and honorary members. Selection for membership rests with the Executive Board and is based on demonstration of scholarship, leadership and service. Activities during the year include participation in the initiation ceremony and other ceremonial events, such as the Professional Works Programs and the annual Country Christmas Bazaar. Outstanding Service Awards are presented to local chapter members each year. Financial scholarships are awarded to outstanding Phi Upsilon Omicron members.
