Scope and Content Note

(A02-08)
This Record Sub-Group contains the professional papers of Elmer Kiehl, Dean of the MU College of Agriculture and Director of the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station from September 1960 through April 1979. The focus of the materials in this Sub-Group is Dr. Kiehl's work following his tenure as Dean and concentrates on his work in international agriculture. The Sub-Group contains few papers relating to his early and mid-career work. A significant portion of the Sub-Group consists of the papers and speeches of professional colleagues.

Biographical Note:

Elmer Kiehl, (1916-2004), was first hired as an extension livestock marketing specialist at the University of Missouri in 1947. He was promoted to instructor in 1949, and Assistant Professor in 1951. He served as Dean of the College of Agriculture from 1960 until 1979. Kiehl served on Presidential commissions to study international agriculture during the Kennedy, Johnson, and Ford administrations. He was instrumental in developing of Title XII, which was a partnership between the Board for International Food and Agricultural Development (BIFAD) and Land-Grant Universities whose mission was to end world hunger through research and development of superior agricultural practices. He worked extensively in international agriculture through BIFAD and the Agency for International Development (AID) and served as the executive director of BIFAD from January 1980 until August of 1982. Work with the University of Missouri and the U.S. government took Dean Kiehl to India, Colombia, Egypt, Tunisia, Liberia, Southern Africa, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh over the course of his career. Following his work for the government, Dean Kiehl returned to teach at the University of Missouri, but he continued work as a consultant with AID until the early 1990's. He retired from the University of Missouri in 1987. Kiehl died in Columbia, Missouri on 27 January, 2004.

Series Descriptions:

The Record Sub-Group is divided into five record series. Series One contains Dr. Kiehl's resume, awards, publications, and speeches. It is arranged alphabetically. Series Two contains correspondence relating to items outside of the MU College of Agriculture. Series Two is arranged chronologically, and within the chronological groups, alphabetically. The chronological breaks reflect the original order of the series. Series Three contains material related to the University of Missouri's College of Agriculture. This includes interdepartmental correspondence, planning and proposals, notes from classes taught at MU, committee work, reports, and events. Series Three is arranged alphabetically. Series Four contains papers relating to Dr. Kiehl's work in international agriculture; including policy papers, proposals, consulting work, and publications relating to Dr. Kiehl's work with various regional and national groups working to relieve world hunger. Series Four is arranged alphabetically. Series Five contains speeches and publications of Dr. Kiehl's colleagues; many of these items lend significant insights into Dr. Kiehl's work and concerns, and into the politics surrounding U.S. foreign agricultural policies during the time that time period.
Note to Researcher: For additional information concerning Dr. Kiehl's earlier career, including his tenure as Dean, see Record Group 3, Sub-Group 26.
