Record Group: 3 C Scope and Content Note (A74-29; A75-34; A94-83) Historical Note: The University of Missouri Chapter of Delta Theta Sigma, an honorary agricultural fraternity, was installed on November 23, 1908. When Ohio State University refused to give up its chapter house and become strictly an honorary fraternity, the remaining membership changed their name to Gamma Sigma Delta and became a separate fraternity. On June 3, 1916, this fraternity merged with The Agricultural Honor Society of America (from the University of Minnesota) to become The Honor Society of Agriculture Gamma Sigma Delta. Objectives of the Missouri Chapter were: (1) to encourage high standards of scholarship and leadership in all branches of agricultural science and education; (2) to encourage a high degree of excellence in the practice of agricultural pursuits, and (3) to render service that would benefit all branches of agriculture. Membership was established from selection of top-level Junior and Senior undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and alumni. An annual Spring banquet was initiated in 1909. A Fall initiation banquet was added in 1956. Several awards were established down through the history of the Society. The Award for Distinguished Service to Agriculture was established in 1958, which resulted in a long list of well-known recipients from around the state of Missouri. The Superior Teaching Award in the Colleges of Agriculture, Home
Economics, Veterinary Medicine, and School of Forestry, Fisheries and Wildlife was established in 1961. A Superior Teaching Award for Teachers outside the College of Agriculture was established in 1970. 1975 brought the addition of several more awards: Distinguished Award in Administration, Distinguished Award in Research, and Distinguished Award in Extension. There were also scholarship awards, and Junior and Senior Faculty Awards of Merit. Other activities of the Society included sponsoring a lecture series, and a tutoring program that spanned the years of 1967-1976.
