Scope and Content Note
This Sub-Group contains materials gathered by UMC School of Journalism Professor William Taft for a documentary history of mass media in the United States. Included in this Sub-Group are news clippings, texts of speeches, Freedom of Information Center publications and conference materials, reports of the Sigma Delta Chi Advancement of Freedom of Information Committee, related student research papers, and records of the Center for Advanced Social Research.
Series Descriptions:
Series 1. - C:11/2/1 (A84-91, A87-124)
This Series contains materials gathered by UMC School of Journalism Professor William Taft for a documentary history of mass media in the United States, (1955-1987). Included in this Series are news clippings, texts of speeches, Freedom of Information Center publications and conference materials, reports of the Sigma Delta Chi Advancement of Freedom of Information Committee, and related student research papers. Topics addressed in this Series include a free press and its impact on fair trials, government regulation of the mass media, obscenity, political advertisements, presidential executive privilege, equal time for candidates, the Watergate investigations, consumer affairs and fair advertising, criticism of the mass media, and mass media law.

Series 2. - C:11/2/2 (A03-32)
This Series contains records of the UMC School of Journalism's Associate Dean, Dr. Robert A. Logan, (1988-1996). Included in the Series are the following records: correspondence, academic dishonesty files [Restricted], accreditation self-study, doctoral faculty meeting minutes, graduate faculty meeting minutes, Freedom of Information Act materials, London program records, student probation records [Restricted], Washington DC reporting program files, and general policy and administrative files.

Series 3. - C:11/2/3 (A14-106)
This Series contains records of the School of Journalism's Center for Advanced Social Research, (1993-2014). The records consist of memoranda, correspondence, project lists and reports, printed and duplicated material, meeting records, software license, agreements, policies and procedures, and budget records. The records pertain to staffing, fiscal performance, and Center policies. The Center started in 1984 as the Media Research Bureau and was renamed the Center for Advanced Social Research (CASR) in 1993. Associate Dean Ester Thorson, Professor Glen Cameron, and Dr. Ken Fleming were three of the Center's directors. The Center closed in 2014.
