Scope and Content Note

(A84-91; A84-97; A91-88; A95-158)
This Sub-Group holds material relating to the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Journalism, focusing on the celebration of "Journalism Week." Included in this Sub-Group are folders for each year's Journalism Week activities, containing photographs, scrapbooks, newspapers (Columbia Missourian), special issue newspapers (Journalism Banquet News), news clippings and publicity, programs, Missouri Honor Awards for Distinguished Service in Journalism materials, correspondence, banquet menus, play scripts, and play seating charts. Also included in this Sub-Group is a 1912 news article concerning a newspaper play, "The Yellow Extra," an annual stunt of the students in the Missouri School of Journalism. Additionally, sixty-nine flags used during the Ninth Annual Journalism Week banquet are included in the Sub-Group, along with a pamphlet describing various flags and providing their historical context. These are flags of various nations and flags of historic interest. All of the flags are hand made.
Note to Archivist: A digital scan of the 1942 Journalism Week poster is stored with Digital Media.

Historical Note:

The first "Editors Week" was held in 1910. The following year, 1911, the School of Journalism held its first "Journalism Week." From 1911 through 1914, the noon luncheons were under the direction of the Columbia Commercial Club. In 1915, the School of Journalism hosted their first night banquet. In 1943 there was no Journalism Week Banquet due to World War II. In recent years Journalism School has shortened Journalism Week to one day celebrated in October.

Series Descriptions:

This Sub-Group is divided into two record series. Series One contains photographs, scrapbooks, news clippings and publicity, programs, newspapers, correspondence, banquet menus, play scripts, and ticket sales records. Series Two holds sixty-nine flags used during the Ninth Annual Journalism Week banquet.
