Record Group: 1 C Scope and Content Note (A87-65; A92-59) Historical Note: The Office of Development and Alumni Relations traces its roots from the Alumni Office, started in 1935. The Alumni Association organization was incorporated into the Alumni Office the same year. In 1956 the Alumni Association initiated a fund raising program called the Alumni Achievement Fund and in 1968 created the Development Fund as a pseudo charter. In 1983, the Office of Development and Alumni Relations (with the Office of University Relations) became the administrative responsibility of the Vice Chancellor for Alumni Relations, Development, and University Relations. Series Descriptions: This Record Sub-Group is divided into five record series. Series One contains various scholarship documentation and loan fund notes, arranged chronologically. Series Two contains Development Fund reports, specifically, gift and allocation summaries, arranged chronologically. Series Three contains two documents concerning the founding of the Development Council by the Board of Curators, arranged chronologically. Series Four contains gift summaries, budgets, reports, and promotional materials, arranged somewhat chronologically by type of document. Series Five contains correspondence, arranged in reverse chronological order. Series Outline:
Note to Researcher: The documents in Series One may relate to the Robert A. Graham Center for Estate (or Gift) Planning and Endowments. The Graham Center was established in 1984 to promote estate giving from alumni and friends of the University of Missouri and to inform such persons as to how those gifts would be beneficial. In 1987, the endowment purpose changed to providing support to activities of the MU Alumni Association. The Center has retained its name, although it is entirely funded as a University office. Essentially, the Graham Center is a fund-raising unit within the Development Division, with this division being under the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.
