History
A Home Economics Education specialization has been offered since the establishment of the Department of Household Economics at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1900. A two-year teacher's course was offered "to meet the needs of those who realize the importance of Household Science and observing the demand for teachers' desire to specialize."
Following the enactment of the Smith-Hughes Act for vocational education in 1917, a department of Home Economics Education was organized in the College of Education. Under the College of Education, Home Economics Education eventually developed into a four-year program. In 1998-99, the HES Education program was transferred from the College of Education to the HES Human Development and Family Studies department, where it was renamed Family and Consumer Sciences Education. The Family and Consumer Sciences Education option leads to a Bachelor of Science in HES. A graduate program in HES Education still resides in the College of Education.
