At the University of Missouri, construction begins on the Memorial Union Tower, a Gothic stone structure complete three years later as a memorial to University graduates who died in World War I. 1930. Work on the South Wing of the Memorial Union begins. Shortly thereafter, a depression begins. A crater remains on the site for more than 30 years. 1946. The Missouri General Assembly approves a bond issue to finance college recreational facilities. Work begins on the North Wing of the Memorial Union in 1950. 1952. The North Wing opens its doors September 8. The University of Missouri News reports, "The magnificent structure adjoining Memorial Tower has quickly assumed its role as an ideal center of student life." 1962. Construction resumes on the South Wing and begins on Brady Commons, an adjunct to the Memorial Union. Both structures are completed the following year. Today. At the heart of the University of Missouri's Columbia campus, the Memorial Union serves as a gathering place for students, a meeting facility for both visitors and the University community, a host for dinners, banquets and receptions, and much, much more. For quick, economical and well=prepared meals, try the Memorial Union Cafeteria, located on the ground floor of the Union's North Wing. Get a jump on your day in the cafeteria's relaxing atmosphere; breakfast begins at 7 a.m., Monday-Friday. Later in the day, enjoy a complete meal or a cup of coffee, the salad bar or the sundae bar. Each Sunday of the academic year, the cafeteria features a different international cuisine (Greek, Chinese, Middle Eastern, French, to name a few). Down the hall from the Cafeteria is the Hawthorn Room, open for lunches and a Sunday buffet. The Hawthorn Room offers gourmet cuisine and an elegant atmosphere for those persons desiring a more intimate luncheon. Upstairs in the North Wing, the Bengal Lair offers a "scramble system" food service. Serve yourself--an early bird breakfast, hot and cold sandwiches, beverages, fresh fruit. The Union Deck, adjacent to the Lari, is open 24 hours a day. Comfortable and convenient, the Deck offers vending machines and well-lighted space for late-night studying. The Sack Bar on the first floor of Brady Commons, like the Bengal Lair, is a popular place to grab a quick, nutritious meal, or just to relax with a cup of coffee and a group of friends. The way to learn, the way to shop, the way to explore. The University Book Store in Brady Commons is an integral part of the University community, carrying a full line of required and supplementary books, best-selling paperbacks, office supplies, sporting equipment, art and engineering supplies. Or you may want to choose from the large selection of souvenir gift items from the University of Missouri-Columbia. The bookstore also has a special order desk, where any book in print can be ordered. A U.S. post office substation is located in the bookstore. The University Book Store is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. In the Union North Wing, the Nook is the place for magazines, newspapers, tobacco products, candy, sundries and small gift items. In Brady Commons, Candy, etc. offers the same products as the Nook, in addition to a film processing service. The information booth in the Union lobby serves both students and campus visitors. Half-hour campus tours leave from the information desk Monday-Friday at 1:45 p.m. The booth is staffed on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Arrangements for groups of more than 10 or for special campus tours can be made through the Visitor and Guest Relations Office, 103 Swallow Hall, (314) 882-6333, Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. A bright idea. The Memorial Union staff is here to assist you in planning conferences, special events and food services. Groups using meeting rooms and facilities may also reserve audio-visual and display equipment. Meeting facilities may be reserved in both the Union and the Commons for groups from 16 to 400. Special reservation rooms include the Jesse Wrench Auditorium (capacity 288), the Faculty-Alumni Lounge (capacity 150) and the A.P. Green Chapel, a nondenominational memorial (capacity 60). Whether you're planning a fried chicken box lunch for four or a formal prime rib dinner for 400, the Memorial Union Catering Service offers outstanding banquet and luncheon menus in the pleasant atmosphere of several dining rooms, including the Mark Twain ballroom. A variety of menu choices, professionally prepared and served, help to make any function enjoyable and worry-free. On the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia, the Memorial Union/Brady Commons continues to be the place for activity, the place to unwind, the place to meet, the place to eat. The Main Lounge, on the first floor of the North Wing, brings together convenience and comfort. During the building hours, the Lounge is a quiet place to study, or to relax. Need to release some tension? Whether you're a wizard or a novice, the electronic video games outside the Bengal Lair always provide a challenge. The Games Area, on the ground floor of Brady Commons, features a 16-lane regulation bowling facility for league and open bowling. The Games Area also give you a chance to try your hand at pool, get serious with a game of chess or get silly with a game of checkers. Bowling lockers are available on a time rental basis. As open bowling hours vary, call 882-2870 for more information. On the second floor of Brady Commons, the Television Room features color television in a comfortable, theatre-style setting. Pay telephones are located in the foyer of both wings of the Union, and just inside the entrance to Brady Commons.
