Requests Bids on Building of Union Annex Union Addition, Annex Get Approval of M.U. Curators The Board of Curators of the University has approved the architect's final plans for the new Student Union Annex, the new south wing of the present Memorial Student Union Building and alternations to the north wing. The University began advertising today for bids for the three projects. The entire Memorial Student Union project will cost an estimated $2,585,000, including construction and other costs and equipment. The funds for the work will come from a loan of $1,700,000 from the U.S. Housing and Home Finance Agency, an issue of $600,000 in general revenue bonds for sale on the open market, and about $285,000 in non-appropriated funds. The costs will be repaid with income from operation of the Union and Union fees paid by students. No state appropriated funds will be used for the project. The entire expansion project is expected to be completed by the fall of 1963. Sealed bids for the construction of the annex on the Mall and Rollins Street will be received until Sept. 14. Bids for construction of the south wing and alterations at the Student Union Building on Hitt Street will be received until Sept. 19. Architects for the expansion project are Jamieson, Spearl, Hammond & Grolick, St. Louis. The additions, which will complete a Student Union project conceived following World War I, are designed to provide facilities for some student activities still housed in other buildings on the campus; additional all-student activities; and, anticipated enrollment [clipping part 2] increase in the years immediately ahead, President Elmer Ellis said. According to the architects final plans, the new south wing will have three stories and a ground floor. Six meeting rooms, mechanical equipment and storage facilities will be house on the ground floor. [clipping part 3] The wing will be of reinforced concrete with interior steel supports and steel beams. Exterior walls will be of limestone rubble with limestone trim to match the north wing. The wing is designed to fit in the overall architectural design of the Memorial Tower dedicated in 1926, and the north wing, opened in 1952. The annex will be a two-story and ground floor structure located at Rollins Street and the Mall, facing the Mall just south of the new Arts and Science Building on the Mall at Ninth Street. It will be of steel and reinforced concrete, with exterior walls of brick matching the Arts and Science Building. On the first floor of the annex will be a snack bar and soda fountain area, and a self-service student book store. The second floor will include a browsing and reading lounge for students; a music listening lounge; an exhibit area; photography darkrooms; poster shop; television viewing lounge; a large multi-purpose area for dance classes and other instructional and recreational uses; offices for the Student Union Activities Board; and administrative offices for the annex. On the ground floor will be 16 bowling lanes for student recreation and for use as a teaching facility for physical education. Alterations to the north wing of the Student Union Building on Hitt Street will include enlarging the cafeteria to increase seating capacity to about 375 persons, and renovating the snack bar to operate on a self-service basis.
