Columbia, Mo., Nov. 7.--The University of Missouri plans to construct a south wing to the memorial student union and construct a 2-story student union annex at another location with a loan of $1,800,000 from the U. S. Housing and Home Finance agency, President Elmer Ellis announced today. The south wing will complete a 3-unit structure begun in the early 1920s as a memorial to World War I dead. The first structure, the Memorial tower, was dedicated in 1926 and the student union, the $2,225,000 north wing, was opened in 1952. Plans for the south wing include a 240-seat auditorium and offices, conference and storage rooms on the first floor, with the second and third floors containing meeting rooms. The proposed student union annex would be located on Rollins street and the Mall, a landscaped pedestrian connection that extends from the south extremity of Ninth street through the campus to the medical center. The proposed building would house all student activities. President Ellis said that the federal agency has approved preliminary plans for construction and has earmarked $1,800,000 for the loan. Total cost is expected to approximate $2,605,000, with the additional funds supplied by a $600,000 revenue bond issue to be repaid from earnings of the student union and $205,000 supplied from nonappropriated university funds. The 1-million-dollar Memorial tower was built with funds contributed by students and alumni. The north wing that houses the student union was financed with nonappropriated university funds and a $600.000 revenue bond issue that has been retired. As a part of the union center, the A. P. Green chapel was built and will adjoin the proposed south wing when it is completed. President Ellis said that the new wing will provide 33,000 square feet of floor space and the proposed student union annex will add 57,300 square feet. It will contain a snack bar and soda fountain, large kitchen, administrative offices of the student union, and the book store. The second floor will have a lounge seating 80, organizational rooms, offices, a poster shop, darkroom for photographers, and music and reading rooms. The ground floor will contain equipment rooms, a 16-lane bowling alley and a billiard room. President Ellis said when final plans are approved by the board of curators, bids will be sought for construction.
