Hearnes Multipurpose Building is named for Missouri's 46th governor, who was instrumental in securing General Assembly approval of appropriations for its construction. Gov. Hearnes is completing a second term as governor after serving five terms as Representative in the General Assembly from Mississippi County and one term as Missouri Secretary of State. He was majority floor leader in the House in 1957 and 1959. Gov. Hearnes is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and received Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law degrees from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1952. He and his wife, the former Betty Sue Cooper, have three daughters. Gov. Hearnes is a native of Charleston, Mo., where he was born in 1923. [page 3] As you walked into the Warren E. Hearnes Multipurpose Building you became aware of its size--It is big--one of the largest structures of its type in the country. It occupies 4 1/2 acres; it contains 323,762 square feet with exterior measurements of 352 by 546 feet. When you consider that a 2,000 square foot home is not considered small, the figures become impressive. The two-buildings-under-one-roof contain an auditorium which seats up to 15,000; and a fieldhouse which has a 220-yard, eight-lane running track enclosing a synthetic surfaced area large enough for football, baseball or tennis practice. In addition to the auditorium arena where the Tigers will play their basketball games, the cagers have another practice court suspended in the field house area; coaches have offices dividing the auditorium and field house areas. Adding to usefulness and making the building truely 'multipurpose' are four lecture halls accommodating 443 persons each, an exhibit hall, five conference rooms and additional work rooms and offices that will be used by the Conference and Short Course section of the Extension Division. Because of the floor plan, it is possible to have half a dozen different activities under way in the building at the same time, with a minimum of interference between participants. Moreover, they can park nearby. Some 3,000 parking stalls practically surround the structure. [eight photographs from construction through completed building] [page 4] Warren E.
