[page 2] Sarah Jane Gentry was born April 25, 1855, in Audrain County, a granddaughter of General Richard Gentry. After the Civil War she moved with her family to Columbia, where she attended the University and received two degrees, a B.S. in 1873 and an M.S. in 1876. She was the second woman graduate of the University. Known as a competent and inspiring teacher, Sarah Gentry had a distinguished career in educational work. Her first position was with Central High School in Kansas City, beginning in 1874. Three years later she was married to Dr. John W. Elston, one of the incorporators of the University Medical College of Kansas City. After the death of Dr. Elston, Mrs. Elston taught in the Woodland School in Kansas City for two years, beginning in 1894. Then she became teacher of English and American Literature in Manual Training High School, continuing until her retirement in 1915. Sarah Gentry Elston died January 17, 1944, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Donald Witten, in Washington, D.C. Another daughter, Bertha, who preceded her in death, also was a prominent Kansas City teacher. The Sarah and Bertha Elston Scholarship for high-school girls was established several years ago by Kansas City high-school teachers. Mrs. Elston's son, Allen V. Elston of Santa Ana, Calif., is an author. A $500 scholarship named in honor of Sarah Gentry Elston was established in the University in 1950 by the Association of Women Students of the University.
