Traffic has been stopped for ceremony and people may stand around front porch and street. Folding chairs will be available for anyone who wants to sit down. Purpose of the program: To emphasize the history of the house and to celebrate the completion of its renovation and restoration. To also celebrate the results of a long time study and plan for the Conley House to become a part of the University of Missouri-Columbia campus. The project is an example of the commitment the University has made to preserve the heritage of the community and to restore/renovate and adapt old buildings for modern day purposes whenever possible to do so. Another purpose of the program is to focus on the current users of the house -- The Honors College in the College of Arts and Science and the Missouri Cultural Heritage Center in the Graduate School and Office of Research. 4. Background (Also see printed program and brochure which will be handed out at program) The Conley house is associated with a long standing Boone County family with many of the descendants continuing to live in the area who are friends of the University and leaders in the community. Official records reflect that Sanford F. Conley purchased the five acres of land on which the house is located, from James S. Rollins in 1868 for a cost of $2000. (You will recall that James S. Rollins was Representative from the area who played an important role in locating the University in Columbia.) Page 2 Construction on the house began immediately thereafter and the family moved in about 1870. There were six children born to Sanford Francis and Kate Singleton Conley, but one died in early childhood. Those remaining children (all deceased now, of course) who grew up in Boone County were: Sanford F., Jr. Milton R. William T. Dudley S. Catherine Conley Miller Dudley S. Conley, one of the sons, served as dean of our School of Medicine from 1933 to 1948. His portrait is among several family pictures that have been given to the University by various members of the family, and his picture hangs on the second floor of the house. Many of the Conley descendants are with us today to help celebrate: Several of them may have lived in the house at one time or another. 5. Recognize: All of the Conleys who are present by asking them to raise their hands. (crowd probably will be standing) Family members will have red ribbons pinned on their lapels. (APPLAUSE) Others to Recognize: Curators: Mr. and Mrs. James Anderson from Springfield, Mo. Mrs. Jeanne Epple, Columbia who will be on program later. (Will give others when we know names.) Legislators if present - (will let you know that day.) Architect for the project: James Darrough of Darrough & Co.in Columbia. Reinhardt Construction Company, Centralia, Missouri Susan Elledge of our University Department of Facilities Management was the interior designer. Many other University personnel assisted in the entire project. Page 3 - Conley House 6. Mr. Dalton will introduce Chancellor Uehling to welcome guests and to thank all of those who have made the project possible. You may want to make some special comments of praise about the Chancellor's leadership in making this entire project possible since the University has been bargaining with the Conley family since at least 1968 trying to acquire the house. It was in 1980, that she was able to finalize the agreement and have George Miller sell the house to us. 7. Chancellor will make comments telling a little bit about the University's acquisition of the house and thank the family for their interest and support. 8. Mr. Dalton will introduce Dr. Howard Marshall and Dr. Ed Kaiser using theme of Heritage of the Past and Promise of the future. Introduce at same time to avoid hopping up and down and to save time.
