Aureomycin originated here

The fungus, Streptomyces aureofaciens,
strain A377, was isolated by Dr. B.W. Duggar from
a soil sample from this field, Plot 23, in timothy
continuously without soul treatment since 1888.

The sample was on of a dozen scent to the
Lederle Laboratories, Pearl River, New York in August 1945,
by W.M. A. Albrecht.  The isolation from Plot 23 was made the
“type” for the original description and the ancestral parent
of all improved strains used by the American Cynamid Company
in production of aureomycin, now in world-wide distribution. 

This reference soil sample was placed in the Smithsonian 
Institute, Washington D.C., with special ceremonies on the
Tenth anniversary of the announcement of the discovery of
this compound, October 15, 1958.
