Hearing on Confederate rock December 4, 1974 The Columbia Daily Tribune, Author Unknown The Boone County Court will hold a public hearing tomorrow to decide whether it should take possession of the Confederate Memorial Rock which was removed from the University of Missouri-Columbia campus more than three months ago. The hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. n the Daniel Boon County-City Building. The memorial to Boone Countians who fought for the South in the Civil War, was uprooted by city workers after students charged it was a symbol of racism on the campus. City Manager Terry Novak has asked the county to take the rock off his hands, but the court decided to take no action without a public hearing. The rock, donated to the city by the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1935, was moved first to the city park at the former municipal airport and then to Nifong Park on the opposite side of the city. Just where the county would put the memorial is uncertain, but the lawn of the Boone County Courthouse has been suggested. Several people have offered their lawns as a resting place for the memorial.
