Ralph Parker: And so that, uh, my, uh, development of the scope of the library and the library stack in serving [?] was, uh, one of the things that I put a great deal of emphasis on. Now related to that was the interest which I had in the use of data processing in libraries, in automation. That had been an area of considerable interest, and there was a certain amount of interest, uh, I'm not sure whether that had any influence in my appointment as librarian or not. Uh, but, uh, my interest had always been in this automation [?] that, and it was heightened here at the University of Missouri because of the continuing problems of getting money for staff. It was always much more difficult to get money for staff then for either expenses, general expenses, or for books. So that, I felt that what we needed to do was to set up systems which would, uh, increase the staff productivity. And I felt that one of the ways was the development of the automation. Now, getting the approval of those changes took years and years.
