MANY MASONS IN TOWN. They lay the Corner Stone of the Parker Memorial Hospital and Hear Speeches by Grand Officers. The formal laying of the corner- stone of the Parker Memorial hospital in Columbia, took place, Tuesday afternoon under the auspices of the Missouri Grand lodge A. F. & A. M. At 2 p.m. the members met at the hall of Twilight lodge, and, preceded by the cadet band, marched to the hospital building on the University campus, where the corner-stone was laid by Dr. C. H. Briggs, grand-master, assisted by other grand officers, opening and closing with prayer by the grand chaplain, Rev. J. S. Parmer. At 2:30 the crowd assembled in the University chapel where the address of the day was delivered by Dr. Victor C. Vaughn, dean of the depart- ment of medicine of the Michigan University, a distinguished scientist, a fine speaker and a native Missourian, who was born near Hunts- ville, this state. Dr. Vaugn talked of hospitals and their benefits, giving his audience many interesting facts. While here he was the guest of Dr. W. A. McAlester. The masons then adjourned to their hall for further exercises. At 6 p.m. supper was served to the visiting brethren by Twilight lodge at the Christian Church parlors. Afterwards Dr. Briggs and other grand officers delivered addresses at the hall. After music by the band and prayer by the grand chaplain, Dr. C. H. Briggs, grand master, announced the purpose of the meeting. He called upon the officers to test the corner stone; the square, the level and the plumb, were applied, and the stone pronounced perfect. The workmen reported that they found the craftsmen had performed their work well. After the copper box and its contents had been placed in the stone, Deputy Grand Master Campbell Wells placed on the stone the corn, symbolizing plenty; Mr. Finnegan, as grand senior warden, poured on the wine, typefying happiness; Dr. Vincil, as grand junior warden poured on the oil, signifying joy. Dr. Briggs then offered prayers. Following are the contents of the box placed in the corner-stone: 1. Catalogue of University of Missouri. 1898-1899. 2. Biennial report of board of curtors to the 40th general assembly for two years ending Dec. 31, 1898. 3. Copy of celebration of the semi- centennial anniversary of the found -ing of the University. 4.
