Scope and Content Note

(A75-34)
This Record Sub-Group contains correspondence, treasurer's notes, and business papers created by Board of Curators members William H. Duncan, Robert L. Todd, and William F. Switzler, as well as William F. Switzler's unpublished manuscript A History of the University of the State of Missouri, From March 13, 1811, to January 1, 1904, and of the College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts, and of the School of Mines and Metallurgy and later correspondence related to the collection itself.

Biographical Note:

William F. Switzler was born in Fayette County, Kentucky in March 1819 and settled in Missouri when he went to work in the law offices of James S. Rollins in 1841. His entrance into politics was marked by his election to the Missouri General Assembly as a member of the Whig party in 1846, a position to which he was re-elected twice. He was appointed Chief of the Bureau of Statistics in the Treasury Department by President Cleveland in 1885. Prior to writing A History of the University of the State of Missouri, Switzler had written and edited several volumes, including Switzler's Illustrated History of Missouri, from 1541 to 1877, The History of Boone County, and History of Statistics and Their Value. He also served as a writer for the Columbia Patriot and founded the Missouri Statesman. He is best known by the university community for serving as a member of the Board of Curators as well as playing an important role in getting the University of Missouri located in Columbia.

The 1890s saw Switzler working primarily on A History of the University of the State of Missouri, and he spent the remaining years of his life, until his death in 1906, working to have it published. In 1905 the Board of Curators agreed to buy the manuscript from Switzler and a payment plan was worked out, with a certain amount to be paid annually. Since Switzler was in his eighties and in poor health, a provision in the plan was made stipulating that after his death, the annual payments were to be made to his family. Board of Curators meeting minutes of succeeding years show Switzler's son, Board of Curators member Irwin Switzler, asking that his father's manuscript be published and seeking to ensure that the University continue payments on the manuscript. The exact reason the manuscript was never published remains unclear.
